Under 10 atty firm. Just rehired a former paralegal that left bc she was fed up. She is now firm manager responsible for hr, accounting, “firm workflow”, final vet of filings, and coordination of “completion of legal matters”. All so principle can cut back to 25 hrs per week. Principle does not do well when he is less involved. Freaks out, micromanages, and generally is an a-hole when he returns. Clear recipe for disaster and malpractice waiting to happen, right?

How do you professionally address a noticeable lack of diversity on your team? More than 85% of my team is white or white passing, and of the remaining individuals none are Black, Indigenous, or AAPI.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Senior revving up to manager promo. Only nervous about one thing at the manager level which is having to answer pointed “Why??” questions from higher up clients on live calls. Any one else work through something like this? I’d appreciate any tips or suggestions as I really suck at dealing with unexpected push back.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

Female here and I hate to say it! I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I wonder how this is calculated in general. What is the percentage bracket of the bonus? Assume it is a high performance 9+ year attorney and the firm is profitable (even with COVID). Former client( filed a bar grievance that was dismissed, sent me a demand letter that an attorney responded to on my behalf, and filed a BBB complaint against my non-BBB law firm) has now pro se filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court.
