We have an estimated closing date for our new construction in California on 17 April. I was planning for 10% down payment initially but I got laid off and now we have only 1 earning(my wife) now so we are worried which loan type to choose. I’m really discouraged. My after tax / after 401k contributions etc. take home pay is $6,500 monthly. I have $60,000 in savings / stocks for a down payment but even looking at a $550,000 home, my monthly payment would be about $3,400 from the calculators I’ve been using. Is that too high?

How many homes should you tour minimum, and how many offers did you put in before you closed? Offer would be for $725K, with 10 percent down. 30yr mortgage @5%. We would need to include closing costs in the mortgage, to keep about $10k liquid. Monthly costs will be about $5k.
