I started a legal support business last year. I work from home and have part time assistant. 150K with 4 firms as clients.

like

I thought about doing that all last year and I’m not sure why I didn’t take the leap. I guess I was afraid of failure. Although, I still do freelance work on the side.

IP (specifically patent prosecution). At the senior level, we often are making over $100k base pay (I’m in the Indianapolis area, 17 YOE). It’s also a specialized area of law without any crossover into other areas (prosecution of patents have their own courts through the PTOs) - this is a big driver of our pay scale

Corporate pays well, especially biglaw.

With 11+ years of experience in corporate and private equity I’m at $150k base with $30-35k annual bonus.

I agree with others that corporate law and intellectual property (IP) tend to pay higher salaries for paralegals, especially if you're in a big city like Chicago. The work can be demanding, but the compensation often reflects that.

like

Antitrust is also quite lucrative. 3rd year para 80k plus OT and bonus puts me at about $105-108k by EOY. In NYC, and that is very average if not slightly below

I am a newly trained paralegal in the DFW, Texas area. Do any of you know of any law firms that would take in a new paralegal, like me?

Patent law

Corporate/M&A/Securities, real estate (learn title and survey!), IP. I’ve always been in Biglaw, so this is for Biglaw. I did corporate for 20ish years and am now in finance. I make very good money.

I've been in real estate for 20yrs. The difference in pay between a private firm and in-house corporate is about $40k/yr. Commercial also pays higher than residential. Firms can be sweatshops especially solo practitioners. Corporate is a much more reasonable pace. Real estate seldom has a billable requirement.

IP is where the money is and at some firms mergers and acquisitions. That’s not too bad to be working PI in Chicago. I have been a PI/Insurance Defense paralegal for 19+ years and can get 75-80 but without any large bonuses like that in NYC.

That sounds low to me, but I am in the NYC metro area, I would say this though the rates for paralegals on the West Bank of the Hudson (NJ) are typically 10-20% lower than on its East Bank (NYC) for the same work. Tax and T&E paralegals along with IP are the top payers, then Corporate than litigation.

IP and in-house counsel. Corporate does well but they have a lot of scary layoffs

I am a litigation paralegal with 29 years of experience. Love Plaintiff personal injury. BUT, the money is definitely in insurance defense. Bigger pockets.

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?
