I like initiative and autonomy in my SAEs, so any question that hints at this is gold. If you asked me what was something I'm currently doing you could take off my plate, I would read that as growth-minded and relational. Read the room on this one, you'll get a sense for micromanagement when asking anything about shared responsibilities or trust.
I also like to see that you're thinking about how to put your own stamp on client work. Ask about a client challenge the AD would be a hero for solving in the next six months. Your eagerness to onboard and provide external value with internal benefit comes through here.
There's a couple titles between SAE and AD depending on the agency structure, and I've had time to consider what I did as an SAE that was successful and what wasn't. Ask about about that time in their career, and how they think the role and expectations of the role have changed since they were in it.
Most of all: be yourself, and by that I mean, be an AE transitioning to an SAE. You don't have to impress anyone, you just have to show that you're ready.
Best of luck!
As an SAE trying to become a supervisor I really appreciate this insight!
What position are you interviewing for? I got very good feedback from the AMD/MD/Sups that I interviewed with when asking these questions.
- What do you hope a person in this role would accomplish in their first 6 months and a year?
- What challenges does your team face? In this position, what problems can I help your team solve?
- What is something you can tell me about ___ company that I wouldn’t find online?
- What qualities does a candidate need to succeed in this position?
I like questions that require my interviewer to think critically about the role and give me a chance to respond with why I have the qualities they need. I back up each of my responses with an example or anecdote, that way it remains conversational and not like I’m firing off questions.
