Useful if you are changing industries - I appreciate reading one when someone is seeking a career change.
I never read them as a recruiter, however, I think that any of my candidates that had taken the time to do a quality cover letter that laid out why they are interested and why they are a fit, usually performed better in interview because they had already spent time thinking about the fit.
Waste of everyone's time. Have a stellar resume and interpersonal skills with relevant experience and you will get the role.
They shouldn't be required with most applications. If a candidate submits it in addition then cool. I personally won't do them when applying for a job anymore.
I like cover letters. The last hire I made got an interview, without any legal experience, because of her cover letter. The letter was very specific and detailed for our company and the position she was applying for. She interviewed very well and got the job.
They are nice in theory. When I'm reviewing candidates for a job that I'm hiring for, I only look at cover letters under 2 criteria:
1) it's a supervisor/manager role
2) there are more than 10 applicants
If it's a lower level job, I find most people don't include cover letters.
It's actually refreshing to receive a decent cover letter.
Outdated.
Very outdated. I don’t require them and I will not apply to a posting that requires one.
