What was your primary motivation for going solo or starting a small firm? Would you say it went as planned?

I wanted flexibility in how I worked. I never wanted to feel like one person could fire me and I would lose everything. I moved from nyc to Flordia, I live on a beach, make 4x as much money set my own rules and my own sechudle.

To be honest it didn’t go as planned. Within 6 months I had two F500 clients. My expected income went above 500k for the year and the client base rapidly expanded. It still is I am landing about 1 large client a month.

Where in FL? I’ll fly down there and be your associate!

I don’t anyone ever makes real money working for someone else.

I had about 14 years of experience and the prior 7 years I had managed a department handling everything from substantive supervision to hiring and firing.

A promised partnership had fizzled out and I realized I didn’t want to devote seven more years promoting someone else’s business only to realize it wasn’t the right fit for me.

If I was going to put that much time and effort into a brand, then I wanted it to be my brand.

The firm and I parted ways somewhat amicably and I started my own firm until I could “find something else,” but also to see if I could do it on my own. If it didn’t work out then I would know that I need to swim with the current somewhere else for someone else.

Within the first two months I had two big flat fee clients, which paid the firm bills for several months.

I had already established myself in the community. So, an announcement on LinkedIn that I had started my own firm brought professional referrals over, which brought clients over.

The business was pretty self-sustaining from the beginning. I’m two years in and not making much net money, but I am going slow and steady so I can spend time with my kid, who I ignored working for the first five years of life.

The business is showing good growth while I invest back into it and my husband and I are committed to seeing a long haul profit rather than a first two year profit. We’ve lived poor before and that doesn’t bother us too much as long as we are happy. We live an incredibly modest life, which leaves us better flexibility to roll with the punches.

All in all, it’s been good. But, it can be pretty lonely. It’s good to have some groups to be involved with so you don’t feel so out there on your own.

A4: elder law and estate planning - but mostly elder law.

Main reason was I couldn’t find a law firm in town doing what I wanted to do so decided to build it myself. I always knew I wanted a niche and would rather start now than 10 years from now. I also love incentives and my last firm didn’t have a clear incentive policy nor did they follow through with bonuses on cases I originated that were promised. The risk is high but then so is the upside!

Been out on my own for six months and have already netted more than I made in three years at my last firm. Will obviously pour the majority of that back into the firm so I can do it again (I represent plaintiffs’ on contingency, so it’s not a steady flow of cash) but still feels good to prove my old boss wrong (who told me it would take 7 years to land my first client and that the cases I brought in before only came in once every 5 to 10 years lol)

Boutique transactional practice. Firm is growing post-COVID. Things are at risk of falling through the cracks. I need an easy way to track matters for status reports with colleagues in the firm without remaking the wheel.

Currently using Clio, which has its limitations for this purpose. I know colleagues that just use an excel spreadsheet.

Looking for advice on what to do with clients if I want to go in-house. We have 5 other attorneys so as of now my clients could likely be absorbed into the rest of the law firm. However if 1-2 of the attorneys here left that wouldn’t be an option. Has anyone done this and have tips?I don’t have an offer yet but I’m trying to prepare. My firm knows I’m exploring this as a career option.

I’m early into my career, thinking of leaving a midsize med mal firm to open a solo practice in business law but don’t have a ton experience in that area. Is this insane?

Has anyone received an SBA 7a loan recently? My lender is telling me I need to use the funds within 3 months, which sounds crazy and on the SBA website says I can have funds for revolving credit. Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.

Advice for Of Counsel roles? I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I’m finding that a lot of my work is for firm clients where the lawyer negotiated a flat fee (and the hours worked are less, due to efficiency etc). What is the right way for me to be compensated in this scenario?

What’s the best way to break up with a firm? I just accepted an offer for in house counsel and need to break it to them today. For context, I like the firm and the people a lot and they will be losing a skill set that they won’t be able to replace yet, but need badly.

Working in a small firm of 3 attorneys. Mostly immigration and PI work. How much commissions should I get for the cases I bring in?

Back when the pandemic first hit, everybody at the firm took a 20% pay cut (with 20% reduction in billables...which was meaningless because I still had work to get done in a timely manner). Pay cuts still in effect through end of year. Anybody else out there still working under pandemic-related salary reductions?

I'm one year out and thinking seriously about leaving my firm and starting my own shop. Ant thoughts on how to make a smooth transition?

I’ve now reached the point in my career where I have the experience, a good client base, and consistent referral sources that I’m ready to leave the small firm I’m with and start my own practice. My preference would be to find a partner and form a partnership because I’d like to have someone to bounce ideas off of and for some social interaction, but if I can’t find the right partner, then I’ll do it alone. Any advice on branching off to start my own firm - whether it be solo or with a partner?

Anyone use Clio? Looking to change perhaps and this one has been advertising hard.

I’m a 3rd year insurance defense attorney in a small town. So far this year through June I’ve billed $110,000 and collected $95,000. I expect the second half of the year to be about the same. My salary is $53,000, with potentially bonus at the end of the year (totally the discretion of the partners). Benefits are fine but nothing special. Am I being undercompensated? I enjoy where I live, the work I do, and the low cost of living, but it’s hard to build up savings on my current salary.

Who are the best non-attorney referral sources for criminal attorneys other than bondsman?
