What would you do: stay in a soul-crushing hybrid role with a decent commute or take a job with better pay / title / WLB but 5 days in office with a much longer commute?

Facing that choice, I guess I'd be going back to the office for five days a week. I'd be happy for better pay, of course, but I assume there would also be more opportunity for advancement. And, getting away from anything soul-crushing seems like a good move.

like

Hybrid .. can't crush my soul any more than they already have lol

I had this exact situation 2 years ago. I took the role and moved up (not that I have updated Glassdoor with new title). I am much happier and my home life is better in addition.

Also didn't have to deal with 2 management changes in my previous role. Most of the staff that is still there are looking at this point.

So happy I made my change.

like

Often we are supposed to move on but we ignore the early indicators until things are so bad that we have no other choice. Each time I have moved on, it was an improvement and an experience that prepared me for the next opportunity.

I don't mind making a change home based is most important

like

I would argue that good WLB isn’t really possible 5 days in office and long commute

like

Ugh, if the current role is really that soul crushing AND the pay is bad, I would probably have to take the new gig too. Commuting is awful (and truly bad on your health) but I think that it's manageable in the short term (maybe you can move closer eventually?)

Have you considered reaching out to other companies that offer work from home positions? You might contact them even if they are not advertising an opening just to see if they might be interested. It's a shame that you have to give up the convenience in order to save your sanity, but it will open other doors for you. Once you are free of that stressful environment, you will have clear thinking about your next move. And negotiate your salary with the new company you are cosidering. It can't hurt. Ask for what you are worth.

Take the new job. Soul sucking is just that- no way to live imo

I would want an environment where I could thrive in. You could use your commute time to connect, listen to some podcasts, audiobooks, or mental health exercises.

I'm looking for a high paying job at home on my computer

Ok billing management would be fine

I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. Due to obvious conditions my comp for the calendar year (salary+bonus) is back to 2017 levels although my overall sales are more than double and 1/3 less total comp than last year. How much actual court experience should a junior litigator expect to get in the first year? I've been my firm 6 months as a civil litigator not and have yet to go to a hearing. I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!
