Facing that choice, I guess I'd be going back to the office for five days a week. I'd be happy for better pay, of course, but I assume there would also be more opportunity for advancement. And, getting away from anything soul-crushing seems like a good move.

Hybrid .. can't crush my soul any more than they already have lol
I had this exact situation 2 years ago. I took the role and moved up (not that I have updated Glassdoor with new title). I am much happier and my home life is better in addition.
Also didn't have to deal with 2 management changes in my previous role. Most of the staff that is still there are looking at this point.
So happy I made my change.
Often we are supposed to move on but we ignore the early indicators until things are so bad that we have no other choice. Each time I have moved on, it was an improvement and an experience that prepared me for the next opportunity.
I don't mind making a change home based is most important

I would argue that good WLB isn’t really possible 5 days in office and long commute
Ugh, if the current role is really that soul crushing AND the pay is bad, I would probably have to take the new gig too. Commuting is awful (and truly bad on your health) but I think that it's manageable in the short term (maybe you can move closer eventually?)
Have you considered reaching out to other companies that offer work from home positions? You might contact them even if they are not advertising an opening just to see if they might be interested. It's a shame that you have to give up the convenience in order to save your sanity, but it will open other doors for you. Once you are free of that stressful environment, you will have clear thinking about your next move. And negotiate your salary with the new company you are cosidering. It can't hurt. Ask for what you are worth.

Take the new job. Soul sucking is just that- no way to live imo
I would want an environment where I could thrive in. You could use your commute time to connect, listen to some podcasts, audiobooks, or mental health exercises.
I'm looking for a high paying job at home on my computer
