Hi, I am new to Canada and currently living in Vancouver, BC. I was looking for opportunities in the Financial Services industry in the Metro Vancouver Area. I have about 3 years of experience in the Banking/Financial Services and HealthTech industry and worked alongside IBM and PwC in developing and implementing cutting-edge FinTech products for business clients of a Financial Institution and led the Finance and data science team at a Health tech startup. Let me know if anyone can help me.

Only appropriate for showing the amount if eaten versus uneaten pie
"Are pie charts the new backpacks?" - Carrie Bradshaw
@C1 - totally disagree. Think people have just started saying this to hop on some new bandwagon because everyone else is saying they hate it. Have seen tons of partners and directors use them and they were received great.
It is visually difficult to compare area or and arc. Basically if you had three similar values in the pie, you aren't able to see the difference unless you have numbers on the side. This makes it a poor form of data viz since it takes away whole reason for visualizing data. There is nothing a pie can do that a simple bar chart can't do more effectively
It's because they only show one dimension of information (the %). It's more informative to use a stacked column or bar graph, which can also show magnitude.
One other appropriate use of pie charts: homemade Harvey balls
It's because after American Pie people started making the donut variation of pie charts, went downhill from there
I would have loved to have seen a picture of beef pie.
I didn't realize there was a problem with them...
How long have you been in consulting? The longer you've been in this industry, the more people you'll meet who hate pie charts and learn not to use them
This is definitely not a new bandwagon. I've heard of this back when I first joined consulting in 2010. Maybe they're ok in PwC... Never seen partners and principals use them in my firm and have been explicitly told by several that they hate them and should never be used in decks. And you didn't answer my question, how long have you been in this industry?
For sure not ok in my part of PwC. They are ineffective at conveying information and a "waste of space"
Cake charts > pie charts
Take up too much space and only show one dimension, stacked bar can show breakdowns along with an additional dimension such as time
