Capital one venture. No fee.
Capital one Quicksilver. No fee on intl charges. Straight up exchange
You need to tell us if you are willing to pay the annual fee and how much. Chase sapphire preferred is pretty good but it does have a 95 fee on it.
Luxury Gold Card - gold plated in 24k and has an annual fee of $995. Sure impresses the girls.
Barclay arrival allows you to write off any travel expense with points, so you won't be stuck on one hotel or airline. American Airlines has multiple cards and let's you open one of each, actually allows you to open a second card too. Accumulate a bunch of sign up bonuses, which are the best value. Marriott cards are ok but point redemptions are high. You'd really have to spend a lot to get free rooms. I have been traveling for free for 2+ years now, and credit score has increased... Don't forget to buy things through online cash back portals - such as ebates - so you get points and cash back.
Amex platinum is worth the fee. Lots of benefits and no international charges
Chase sapphire preferred or Barclay arrival/AA citi card for sure. Skip capitalone
BDO1 hope you included that $500 as income on your tax return, don't want to be stealing from the government
Credit card rewards are not taxable. The IRS views them as discounts on a purchase rather than a gain. Thus they were properly excluded from my returns :)
Also, be careful when opening too many cards for the rewards only to close them soon thereafter; I had some friends find out the hard way that that can adversely affect your credit score.
Barclay arrival is good
No fee (don't really see the point if the rest are so many cards without fees) and I already have quicksilver. I called them last night and I'm eligible for an upgrade to venture capital. What are your guys thoughts on discover card miles?
@PwC1: CapitalOne has two cards of similar names. The VentureOne card only gets 1.25pts for every dollar spent and has no annual fee. The Venture card gets 2pts for every dollar spent, but an annual fee of $59. I have the Venture card and it's easily my favorite card; straightforward, good rewards (no caps or preferred vendors), and great for travel (no foreign transaction fees).
Also consider if you prefer any given airline. For example, the CapitalOne and other similar travel cards that are independent from a specific airline can be great because you rack up points you can use anywhere. However, they rarely provide some benefits I really enjoy such as free checked bags for yourself and a certain number of companions, priority boarding, discounts on in-flight purchases, significant bonus points by booking through the airline's website, etc. Don't be fully deterred just because there's a $99 annual fee, because sometimes you can make that up in just one round trip flight with you SO ($25 baggage fee * 2 people * 2 one way trips = $100). And don't be fooled by the "bonus points" they give you either - check how much money each point is worth because 10K miles in CapitalOne won't buy you the same as 10K on AA/Delta. Compare all of this on nerdwallet.com!
I agree w D1. Delta is pretty awesome too.
Pec3 - which venture cars gives 2pts?
Why get Amex platinum if we all already have Amex cards from our job
Consultant 1 why? Why is it worth it to pay the fee for chase sapphire ?
@EY OP. I opened the chase sapphire, earned 50,000 points cashed them out for $500, or is it 50% -$250 for cash, I honestly forget? closed the card paid no fee. Most of the fee cards don't charge til year 2 and you can just cancel them then.
@OP: The Venture card with the annual fee of $59 gets 2 miles for ever dollar spent (2 miles = $0.02 and can be redeemed against travel related purchases; keep in mind that ever provider defines 'miles' differently). They also have sign on deals going on all the time, so my annual fee was waived in the first year and I got 40,000 bonus miles (equivalent of $400 that I used towards a plane ticket) after spending $3,000 in the first few months.
