What’s the difference between a manager and a senior manager? I’m a manager currently and want to know what I need to do to be a senior manager. Meaning how do I stand out for promotion. I feel like senior managers are more tax technical and manage more people. I also think they handle the business aspect, like profitability and client relationships.

I mean I think you nailed it.. SMs are potential partners in training like college athletes are in training for the pro leagues. From everyone I’ve heard growing a book of business and connections is the path forward at this point, more so SM. Just show you’re technically capable and have interest in sales, I think that’s what most partners are looking for. Not even sure you have to have amazing management skills to succeed

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.

Left my first job after just shy of two years because I was bored. Have been at my current job for about half a year and it’s a great resume builder but an absolute horror story (long hours, unreasonable clients, tons of weekend work that’s not worth the pay). If I left in a few months, at the 10 month mark, would that significantly hurt my chances of getting a strong exit opportunity? I can’t imagine staying here for the full year but I don’t want to blow my chances at leaving for a cool job

I’d like to have a better idea of how much time should be estimated on top of design tasks.

I’m looking at our historical data to create baselines for how resources are budgeted and spent on projects.

What percent of a design project should be spent on management and operational tasks?

I have this broken down into, client communication, internal communication, and project setup / maintenance. What else should I track?

Is it me or does the newer generation value more intangible things that aren’t easily measured like work-life balance, fulfillment and purpose in work. Which makes it difficult for firms because that’s not something that is easily measured. Also, this is why there is “value” in crypto, NFTs and the metaverse. It’s a clash of the generations that value tangible things like money, houses, cars and one that values time, experiences, personal online image. Thoughts?
