$70-120K is actually not bad for a range. Gives leeway for a candidate that is green vs one that is a high performer with oodles of experience.

More than likely what they did was post the salary band for the Grade Level of the job. A common practice in a Compensation plan is to establish ranges for bands and during the content review of the job you will assign a grade. That grade is tied to the salary range as well as other compensation pieces such as bonus potential.

Some states require companies to include a salary range with job postings. I assume the way to comply with any applicable laws while also flouting them is to post a range that's so broad it's essentially pointless. But, in fairness a range is just that, a range that would apply to any number of situations. Some applicants will be very experienced, some much less experienced, so the range has to relate to that reality.
Could have misrepresented their salary. Out of all the places I interviewed where the salary was part of the discussion I would say about 4/5 were dishonest and most had other red flags as well, like panel interviews, etc.
