Manager to Director, 150 -> 210. That was the point where I could make a budget, stick to it, and still have enough left over to not worry about big purchases.
I’ve only had one jump so far. 65k -> 120k. I think the coolest part is now being able to pick up the dinner tab for my retired parents without worrying if I’ll make rent.
$305k to $0
Now $0 to $90k
$100k to $150k
To expand here. $100k got me a house, two nice cars and stability. $150k gave me freedom with the same lifestyle.
EM1, how the hell do you buy a house 8x your salary? Was the downpayment like 50%?
SM->P
Everything before it was no comparison
Lifestyle hasn’t changed though
Chad.
100k > 140k (MCOL), finally felt like I was able to save/invest while also enjoying my life
Going to cheat a little and say $70k to $125k.
Technically there's a $105k stop in between, but only for a few months. Way back in the day of the mid-2010's I picked up on a particular niche and was able to go staff consultant > architect > manager-level contractor >manager-level FTE in the space of exactly a year. Took a little over 3 years to get to $200k TC from there, then 2 1/2 years to get above $300k.
-$125k is when I was able to pay all of my bills without thinking about it
-$200k is when we could add in maxing out 401k and IRA, pay off vehicle loans, plan to buy a house, then buy the house
-Since exceeding $300k, we are also able to plan and do major house projects and travel internationally once per year while still doing all the rest
But $125k is when I stopped living paycheck-to-paycheck, so that was the biggest change, both in lifestyle and psychologically.
$98k to $170k was a gamechanger for me
Can you elaborate on the position change?
For me the magic number was $150k base in NYC. Don’t get me wrong, I can still spend more than I make in a month very easily, but a) that kind of budget gives you plenty of room to clown around and b) makes it so that you can dig yourself out of a hole / start to build a cash cushion.
$85 to $165. Kept my lifestyle pretty much the same and was able to cash flow a traditional wedding and a house downpayment in under 2 years.
I went from $76k to $140k in 1 job hop and it actually wasn’t nearly as impactful as I thought. Didn’t help that in 2020 everything doubled in price too 🙄 (HCOL)
Same happened to me in high cost of living area. Post covid, doubled salary and it feels almost the same as before.
100k post tax to 200k post tax (got married), was able to meaningfully upgrade the quality of life, buy a condo, etc, and still save around 100k usd a year
30k to 110k. Went from having to count every dollar to being able to actually live
Probably when the spouse went from being a resident making $50K to a full time doc at $300K.
Not “salary” per se, but comp went up once I made partner last year. 285 as a director to 525 (exptected
Comp)
$250k to $400k. I feel totally comfortable in NYC now. But still not rich.
Yeah I’m Asian and have worked in almost every Southern state including Texas and have always been treated well. Southern hospitality is real. Super polite and sweet people. It’s possible they are talking smack behind my back but I only care how they treat me in person.
$90k to $125k
I'm an associate at 3 yoe
The most significant increases I've received were either in conjunction with a move to a HCOL area, about the same time as getting married and buying a house, and shortly after our sone was born, so the extra income had pretty much already been spoken for.
Over the course of my career I've been blessed with a pretty amazing comp progression, but I have yet to have an "I have arrived" moment, though I do admit that there is a certain level of financial security that I haven't always had.
Lifestyle creep is a very real thing, which we have experienced. It takes intentional budgeting to live within one's means at ANY income.
200-310. I just spoil my kids more.
Probably from $65k as a college graduate to $125k when I got my promotion 2 years later. Went from living with family to buying a home and comfortably paying for bills and traveling about 3-4x with the wife. Now at $175k and I just live very comfortably with a house and nice car and traveling 4-5x a year.
