Americans have become infatuated with the idea that if you suffer and make it everyone should suffer like you or worse.
I can see how it's linked to a larger cultural issue. Perhaps something about working in law exacerbates this mentality? I suppose I don't have that great of a frame of reference for the professions, maybe it's just common across the board.
It’s now becoming common. People are addicted to drama and are toxic and will bring their own insecurities to the work place when it should be a team atmosphere. Let the egos go and you will have the perfect workplace. I would say hi to others and they wouldn’t respond. I was let go because I knew too much and suggested ways to make things better. It made others I guess look bad. When I told the truth about what was going on no one believed me or take accountability for their own mistakes.
It actually was for the best because my mental and physical health suffered and now I’m getting back and loving myself so much more. I am excited to be at a place where I am valued.
This was me
I’ve been at a good amount of firms, left some for toxicity and some for higher pay. 80% of them had issues with the partner micro managing, condescending emails from partners admonishing, no autonomy over my work etc. There are some firms I’ve been at, that were exception to this rule so I know they are out there. The good ones I left for higher pay, I now regret and should’ve stayed because no money compares to your mental health.
The last sentence makes me feel validated. I was offered a rather substantial raise for a new position but it was abundantly clear in the interview the place was toxic (some even warned me during the interview). Turned it down and never looked back. More money is great, but not if it’s going to cost me my sanity.
It seems like everyone good leaves.
Agree with this - all the nice normal people leave and the toxic people seem to remain the longest.
15 years in, 4 different workplaces, and not seen a toxic one yet. Toxic opposing counsel, sure.
Counsel 1, are you the drama?
I really find there’s only older partners and senior counsel/associates that still push toxicity bc they endured it themselves and want to, in turn, haze others the same. Though I endured some of this when I first started practicing, I do not torture my jrs in the way I was. In fact, in working collaboratively and promoting positivity, I find they work better, more productively, and we all somewhat enjoy what we’re doing together. Toxicity in the work place needs to end. Work sucks on its own; unsure why ppl want to double down and make it worse—I chalk it up to some egotistical senior that is on a power trip.
Exactly especially your last sentence
Well said A3. I completely agree.
