Why is it a faux pas/ “cringe” to use your bachelors after your name in resume/ signature/ social media, but it is generally acceptable for a masters?

Anyone else list their bachelors degree after your name?

E.g.,

David Solomon, BSc/BA/ BComm

Abigail Johnson, MSc/MA/MBA

Faux pas to include anything below an MD/PhD

Even then, the realest ones will only leave it in an email signature and then just go by their first name

like

Its cringe af when a PhD is introduced as Dr. Save that for real doctors.

like

I have never put M.S. after my signature. That’s as crass as Esquire.

likefunny

You must work in Europe. Masters+ was common in Germany (my favorite was Prof. Dr. Dr.). However, no one uses a masters title in the US. From my perspective, it comes off as insecure and narcissistic. Those craving the recognition are often the least capable in my experience.

like

They’re both cringe

like

At least at our firm it's definitely a faux pas

like

It cringe for anyone except a MD

like

Why stop there… why not put:

Grant Thorton, MPP, BA, High School Diploma, 8th Grade Graduate

likefunny

Bachelors is undifferentiated I guess

like

Let’s reframe - in what scenario would including a bachelors degree in an email sig or LinkedIn differentiate or credentialize yourself?

like

Any degree title behind your name is trash except MD

like

Also, given how worthless most undergrad degrees are when it comes to being an indicator of acumen or potential performance, I can’t imagine any reason why one would brag about it in their title.

There is virtually nothing special about any business degree, people in science fields typically go on to obtain a graduate degree, performance arts credentials are probably secondary to your actual performance, and liberal arts degrees… you know.

Only exception I could think of would be for engineering majors. They can use that degree upon graduation, it’s difficult and typically rigorous, and it actually means something.

like

I asked my uncle this question many years ago. He said adding your title after your name adds exclusivity to made you stand out from a pool of people if your degree is not commonly acquired within a given domain and region. Given the significant rise in recent years in people with a bachelor’s degree, it’s probably redundant today in most white collar occupations atleast. There’s more value in putting a rare certification or a higher degree like a M.S in a super specialized, Ph.D, etc

like

Given that a bachelor’s is the minimum in a lot of industries: Who cares?

But to me the only one that matters is maybe a doctorate.

like

BA/BS is commonplace, higher degrees are more differentiating and supposed to position you out of the crowd. Depending on your field of work, these credentials can be of high regard. For others (if not most), all we see is that you think you’re so great except that you’re a mofo schmuck

funny

What about all them MBAs out there doing this 😂😂

(Any of you fall into this category)?

These people are such losers

For the MBAs out there (myself included), please remove it from behind your name as well lol

I’ll say that going with ex: Google or Amazon or PwC or whatever in your LinkedIn profile is even worse

Just got off the phone with a recruiter who asked me what year I graduated from my MBA program and college and effectively told me I was too old for the role. I do have the 1 year of experience they asked for in the job in question. It's just that I have all this other experience in things unrelated to the role or things I want to deemphasize in my next role. Is there anything I can do? I only list the last 8 years of experience (as it's most relevant) and don't have my graduation years listed.

Wonder if anyone can offer advice on which cert to pursue next? I obtained my CompTIA Security+ last year and wondering if I should go for the CySA+ or Pentest+ next. I was hoping one of these next certs will help me finally break into a security role and love the idea of pentesting but not sure if the CySA+ is more beneficial.
