The max upgrade you can get as SPG Plat (even with Ambassador - as I have one) is a Standard Suite. This usually translates to a junior or full (one bed) suite. Even if the Presidential or Honeymoon Suite is open, it doesn’t mean you’ll get upgraded to it with your status haha.
That one level upgrade rule must be new bc it’s typically not how it’s happened for me at all, and a big part of what’s contributed to my extreme loyalty to SPG.
How can you tell they're open?
K1, try to make a reservation for that day and see if a suite is available to book
Can you ask them about it? I would
Oh I did. They offered me a junior suite with a bad view. I see four amazing ones online available. Called SPG - looks like they switched their platinum line over to the regular Marriott rewards service line. Never have I ever not waited less than 20 min to talk to someone when calling in to that. So upset
@A1 commonly debunked method at flyertalk.com
A2, meaning that that method doesn't work? Wanna explain?
Basically, the actual inventory of the rooms at the hotel may reflect incorrectly on the website. Maybe they are sold out of regular rooms and need the suites. I'm not sure what happens if you actually book the suite This type of complaint has come up frequently in the forum and an SPG representative as well as other users always point out that searching for suites on the site is not an accurate way of seeing suite availability I'll caveat this by saying there are also many hotels that just won't upgrade you unless you ask, but G1 is also right, you're only entitled to one level up based on availability
In my 7 years, it has always been a rule, but I definitely saw SPG hotels go above and beyond. It's definitely dependent on hotel management but I imagine the merger is causing a lot more hotels to stick to the exact rules and service will decline
