Would another big 4 give early promotion? Currently Senior 2 in Tax at EY. Not getting promoted this year but pretty much guaranteed promotion next year if I stick around. I am planning to change

If you're moving anyway, you'll lose the goodwill at your current office, so meh. Why not?

like

No- EY promotes once a year.

Offices next year after promotion. Wonder if I can get early promotion this year by interviewing at another big 4 in the market I am moving to next year

Yeah goodwill will be definitely lost but I will have enough time to rebuild it as a manager. My question really is if anybody has gotten early promoted at a different firm then their current firm.

I don't want to move as a senior as that would be much harder to build goodwill as I would have less than a year and that may not be enough to impress all the right peeps in the management

Probably not. I switched big 4s and it was a rough transition. When I was interviewing, the question was whether I should repeat a year or continue at the same level. If you're not already a rockstar at EY and able to demonstrate why it seems unlikely they'd let you skip a year unless they were very desperate. Plus, an experienced hire is always a risk because the hiring firm only has a few hours to get to know you before making a decision. It would help if you had a strong story as to why you were leaving the firm and why you deserved to skip a year.

I have really good reviews which basically state that I manage all the engagements I am on. I am already killing it at my current position. I guess the biggest road block would be answering the question why should we promote you early if your current firm isn't doing it.

That's exactly what the other firm will ask. Why should we early promote when the people who have been working with this candidate for 4 years wont? If you're truly killing it then you'll have no problem making manager after one year at senior 3. If you want to play it safe then wait a year. I waited until after my 5th busy season then made the case to come in as manager early. I also left my market for a different city due to my spouse, which explained why I was leaving. And EY dominated the market where I was moving to. So there was an easy to understand narrative as to why I wanted to switch firms and helped alleviate the suspicion that the switch was because I wasn't performing at my other firm.

That makes sense. I am confident I will get promoted to manager next year for sure so that's not going to be an issue. Was just exploring different avenues to cut a year

Not gonna happen on a switch. The firms don't promote upon hire. They know you've gotten passed over for early promotion at EY so why would they be inclined to early promote you when the firm you've spent the last 4 years with won't? Just not a risk they'd be willing to take; at least not in a large or mid market. Maybe if it's a small market and they're extremely desperate, but I'd think staying the course at EY is the best option here.

Hi All - I’m at a firm that has some infrequent in-house training but not enough to help me develop skills to eventually become a trial lawyer. I know cases rarely make it to trial anymore, but I’d like to develop my skills as much as possible to position myself well when they do. Does anyone have any mock trial programs they’ve participated in outside of their firms that they would recommend?

I’m working for an agency where Art Directors are essentially managers of designers. Art Directors are promoted from Senior Designer, we have no Junior Art Directors.

This hasn’t been my experience, I’m used to Art Directors and Designers having separate career paths. However, I’m trying to keep an open mind. Is this org structure familiar to to anyone else? If so, has it been effective? Thanks in advance!
