At any level above Senior, how do u manage the relationship between utilization and realization, which is an inverse relationship. Seems to be either blow the budget (and write it off), or eat a lot of time.

I’ve been on the bench with less than 10% utilization for 3wks now. I’m a first year and the past month has been slower with not many new projects coming in. I do see a few new projects come in every week but I’m not getting staffed on them. Should I be worried? Should I ask my PM if I should be worried? We’re in a pretty small group less than 20 people

What’s your utilization right now?

I work at one of the larger mid tier firms (think 5-10 in terms of revenue). The firm wouldn’t promote me from A1 - A2 citing poor utilization. I feel like I’m underpaid now. Should I try to get an offer from one of the big 4 and see if my company will match?

I think the utilization metric is so flawed, yet it seems to be the number 1metric people rely to judge fdd staff. It heavily penalizes efficiency (if it takes everyone 5 hours to complete something what motivation do I have to be faster only to need to fill any saved hours with more work). Can you share any ideas on how to improve fdd metrics or perhaps share what your company does that makes performance great again.

Do all companies keep track of staff utilization and vacation, and when busy periods come by use it to overstaff/stretch you? Example: employee taken 2 weeks vacation by August, so in Q4 when things get busy they might be asked to take less vacation or more projects as they had lower utilization

Does anyone know of any fully remote positions in utilization review? I’ve been a nurse for 22 years, have been a UR nurse for over 6 years. BSN and MBA. Looking to move up in management, however my current employer is very small so room for movement is minimal.

So last week my company announced that all architects and above will have their bonus structure changed.

Before, if I billed 40 hours a week I get 300% bonus. If I billed 32 a week I get 100% bonus.

Now, If I bill 28 I get 100%, but anything over 28 hours means nothing. The 100-300% bonus amount, which I used to control, is now based on company utilization, so how much everyone bills. If we beat the target by 6% we get 300% bonus. But that’ll never happen. I’m not expecting to get over 100%

There are people from my team with utilization in range of 30% to 50% and got promoted to manager 1 and sa2 respectively.

I have almost 75% utilization, so wondering why work so much. Thinking of aiming for 55% utilization this time.

Are you all seeing a slow down in companies' interest in hiring? Several companies have mentioned to me that their benches are very deep at the moment and that they would only be able to offer if a specific contract/case bid is won so I can be assured immediate utilization. Overall recruitment and job opportunities are just starting to feel less "open". Is this just in my head or are others experiencing the same in their searches?

Are others seeing their work slow down? It’s been a pretty dramatic halt for me. I thought maybe it was a me problem, but others in my group admitted they are also slow. I’ve been consistently 110-120% utilized, but I’ve only billed 22 hours this month. I’m in fund formation.

During initial onboarding with the firm, does the first week or so count towards utilization or is there somewhat of a grace period?

Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

I haven’t done caselaw research since 1L and this isn’t even my practice… wtf do I do (I am fully utilized in my normal work and have a few deals closing soon…)

Sat on the bench for 10 weeks this Spring looking for a project (met with folks daily and actively engaged RM & Coach multiple times a week). Based on the util spreadsheet it looks like i’m going to fall in the high 70’s for utilization this year. This was supposed to be my promotion year (C3 to SC1) so feeling like I might get shoved out the door come YE. Has anyone been in this situation before?

Construction Project manager with 7 years of experience in Project and Risk Management working for a large scale capital projects ($2m to $100M).

I have a Masters and Bachelors in Civil Engineering and a Financial management certification program (8 months-online) from Cornell University.

There is a lot of money that goes down the pipeline not utilized effectively in a project's lifecycle from funding to design to construction and completion.

Any advice on pivoting my career to consulting?
