Career Advice: Non Tech PM in the DC/Nova area with an AWS SA cert. Trying to get staffed on a cloud based project at work but opportunities seem slim due to COVID. Would like to exit to a Eng. Manager, PM or Product role at AWS.

Should I - 1) Apply at AWS and test my luck 2) Spend a year or two with a smaller beltway bandit/aws partner in a cloud tech based PM role before approaching AWS? 3) Apply for a cloud based role at a Big 4 before AWS? if so, I'm case ready,

I’ve now reached the point in my career where I have the experience, a good client base, and consistent referral sources that I’m ready to leave the small firm I’m with and start my own practice. My preference would be to find a partner and form a partnership because I’d like to have someone to bounce ideas off of and for some social interaction, but if I can’t find the right partner, then I’ll do it alone. Any advice on branching off to start my own firm - whether it be solo or with a partner?

I’m exploring opportunities outside of Deloitte. What’s it like at McKinsey in the cleared (TS) space? I saw a posting for a specialist role - TS required, partner track. What’s the age cap on a McKinsey partner. Som many questions!

Thoughts on a late 1st year going in-house? I'm getting close to an offer with a decent corp, in a dream location (Miami) with equal or slightly increased salary (cravath scale). My story is unique because I had significant experience prior to law school that makes me somewhat marketable to the company. While I'm well aware of my limited practice knowledge, I don't feel like I'm actually learning in my current role anyway. I also have zero interest in making partner. Is this too soon to jump?

What is the best way to gracefully exit a small firm where the senior partner is very high-profile, knows everyone, and is likely to be personally offended by my departure? This partner has also begun their term in a very public-facing and time-consuming position - 1 year term. I can’t do it anymore but I know it’s bad timing and I don’t want to burn this bridge. Help!

In my second year post-MBA at a strategy focused firm (DD and strategic road mapping; we do up to post-merger integration but very little straight ops work) and starting to look at exit opps.

I would like to get P&L responsibility as soon as I can, but not sure what the right exit is for that. Should I be focusing on corporate strategy at medium to large orgs that can parlay into GM, or look at something else? Ultimately I want to be an operating partner in PE or C-suite

Currently work at a consulting partner of SF at associate consultant level w 1 YOE. SF offered a new grad position starting next month. Pay is slightly lower but culture here is BAD. Should I take it?

SAP contractor hiring is broken. Everyone knows it. On one end we have customers paying good money for all levels of talent and on the other contractors are being j***d off by vendors and layers. It’s the classic case of a highly fragment and low NPS market. Just got an interview for a SI Alliance role for SW I work on. $185k base 30% bonus. More risk; less stability and guaranteed growth. It’s a insurance Policy admin.

My firm recently moved me to a new practice area. The partner who I have worked with for quite some time does not have enough work, and she does not want to be in a supervisory, teaching role. The firm moved me without having a real conversation, and the practice areas are like night and day. On one hand, I am extremely grateful to have a job. However, I am afraid that this jump could stunt my career since the new area has few exit opportunities. Any thoughts on how to proceed? Leave my firm?

I’m white, married for a decade. The difference between me and my spouse on current events might be the demise of our marriage. Spouse agrees that George Floyd’s death was murder, but is fighting me about financially supporting marginalized people to bring change. I’m really trying to hear my partner’s point of view and keep an open mind, but they actually think black people simply commit more crime and want to live off government subsidy. Unwilling to acknowledge racism’s role here.

How important is the number of years that you spent at your firm when you are being considered for partner position?

Advice please. I came into my firm as an onboarded team/staff attorney at a medium-sized firm. Not through a temp agency or a contract attorney, for clarification. Project ended and am now permanent, but not an associate. Aside from the title and partner track, I am paid $100k less than my class, and do not get the development opportunities. Awesome firm with killer reputation. I have expressed my desire to move forward as an associate. Then came Coronavirus. Poor timing to reignite my position?

I’ve been in consulting for over 10 yrs, since I finished grad school in my mid-20’s. I definitely feel like I’ve lost the passion though. I used to care about getting promoted or making partner, but now I just want to do my job and get on with life. Today was suppose to be my graduation day. Instead I had an experienced hire Big Four interview this afternoon with a senior manager and partner. Was referred to them by another senior manager. Told quite a few positions need to be filled. No hiring freeze for those positions. Don’t expect to hear right away due to Covid delays,working from home, and it being late afternoon on Friday. How long of wait time till I should worry about no offer? Super excited and nervous all at once. Advice needed!

Any thoughts on Big 4 international tax advisory role vs in-house tax counsel role at F100? I am currently happy at big4 but worried about career progression at big4 as I probably will hv the technical skills but not the people skills/ sales skills to make partner. Has anyone left Big 4 to go independent with current client? My current client offered me a full time role but I want to come in as an independent consultant. I’d save them money and think they’d go for it. I’d use it as my first client and look to try my own consulting business. It’s always been my dream and I don’t see myself going through the ringer to make partner although I respect folks who do a ton. Just not for me. Too much mental health issues already. Can’t add that stress.
