If I get laid off, I’d prefer it be done on Monday not Friday. I don’t want my weekend ruined thinking about it.

Is now a bad time to find another job? I think I keep hearing about people getting laid off and another offer was actually retracted from me because of a hiring freeze. I would assume new comers are the first to go.

Does anyone have a good system for saving their shared work files in case they get laid off? Most of my work happens in Google slides and and trying to figure out if there’s a better way to save them than individually downloading pdfs of each one

How do you know if you’re about to get laid off due to factors that aren’t performance?

I was just laid off despite having stellar performance, a recent raise, excellent relationships internally and externally, and being the most billable person in the department. Two questions: 1) Does NY have any rules regarding how long I have to review the severance agreement, and 2) I've heard people have negotiated their severance package, but I have no idea how, because what leverage do I have to negotiate with?

On one hand, it’s kind of cool to see an agency include the proofreader and project manager in the credits. On the other, they left out all the people they laid off…

Quiet firings are happening through out the industry right now. Agencies have become better about hiding the layoffs and firings. Not a good thing…

Laid off journal - Day 7: Took two naps before noon today.

A friend of mine had 5 jobs in 2 years. He got fired every time. He calls all the agencies and leaders he worked for toxic but I feel he’s just not good at getting feedback or taking responsibility for his work. It seems to me he’s just being unreasonable. I worry it’s going to happen time and time again. What should I tell him?

I saw an article about a "mouse-juggler", it helps move your mouse and prevent your computer falling asleep.. making it seem like you are productive when you WFH

Apparently, it's a tactic being used against companies who track productivity and track your usage at home... this is new to me.

Has anyone actually been fired or told that they have seen their productivity low via Remote Spying Software?

It makes sense to monitor communication such as Slack but tracking the CPU usage feels wrong :/

I’m terrified of an impending recession :/ just been hearing news of layoffs from agencies and companies and I’m filled with anxiety. Been at my new workplace for less than a month and I’m worried it’ll be a last-in first-out situation if it comes to that. Any advice on preparing for a recession?

Serious question:
Just got laid off and am getting a generous severance package. If I accept any kind of work - be it freelance or full time - will that nullify my severance. Or is that severance pay guaranteed until it runs out?

I was just let go from my company which I really enjoyed working at after only 9 months in a newly created role. I was completely blindsided and told it’s was due to scope and organizational changes. I had no performance reviews or discussions leading up to termination. It didn’t seem like this was a performance driven decision, but I feel completely left in the dark and unsure what to do in this economic climate. Should I ask for more severance (4wk/2 paychecks is what they offered)?

Agency I work at just laid off 20% of it’s staff. We were already super understaffed with the amount of work coming in. Now everyone’s workload has doubled from letting people go. I feel extremely fortunate to still have my job but damn this sucks across the board.

So, I gave my agency an advanced 4 week notice of my departure so they could have time to plan for my replacement and the team wouldn’t be left in a lurch, and now they’re deciding that my last day will be two weeks earlier. That doesn’t feel right. It feels like I’m being fired for quitting. An agency full of good people you thought were your friends turned out to be all about business and numbers. Lesson learned. Never give an advanced notice.

Q4 layoffs are coming. Most US agencies, especially those in holding companies. I know because I’m nosy. This isn’t a post to cause drama, etc to be clear, but with 20 years in I want to pay it forward with some helpful advice:

If you are a below a director level

- Don’t jump ship. You’re “cheap” and if your agency is smart they will target higher earners. Instead, get on work. Long tenured work. Visible work. Now.

- Get visible to leadership. With work, press, ERGs, etc.

New to the industry & working in finance, in my role do you think it matters what agency is “better” than another being that finance is pretty standard? I think comparing agencies would be more important if you’re a creative or working in strategy. I get “better agency” = better work which drives rev/profits & prevents lay offs but I would think finance would be one of the last depts to be laid off. Have an opportunity for a finance role at a diff agency that may not be as “good” but pays more

The worst creative I’ve ever worked with was just hired by W+K. Never made any decent work. Didn’t care about the work. We got awesome briefs creatives dream of and they wouldn’t lift a finger, putting extra work on the rest of the team. They mostly went unnoticed in the agency except by the people on their immediate teams who hated working with them. When we found out they were leaving, everyone assumed they got fired. So how does this person wind up at W+K?

Why do most people (recruiters) assume employees are at fault when they get laid off? What’s up with the interrogations in the interview? Why not think employers may be at fault? Or neither in some cases.
If the employee did something wrong, they would get fired. In all cases I know and witnessed, employer's and upper management were at fault, even in business losses case.
