Good morning. I am currently a senior associate in BugLaw, and I have applied to several trial attorney jobs in Chicago offices of federal agencies since the start of the pandemic. According to usajobs.gov, my applications to the DOJ and CFTC were “referred,” and my application to the SEC was received and my GS scale verified. But I haven’t received any updates on these applications in over a month. Does anyone here have any insights on these or on federal hiring generally? Thanks!

It would be ambitious... it’s typically a 5-6 year requirement
Agree with AD1. Plus, the question isn’t necessarily “are you qualified” but rather do you think you can handle it and are you ready? Might be worth applying to a few roles and see how it goes/how you feel. If you aren’t having luck or it’s clear they feel you are not ready, then maybe look for a Senior AE role or an AE role with more responsibility!
If you’re amazing and a thinker vs. do-er, then confidence and poise outweigh years. If you’re not there but land the job anyway, your peers will sniff it out pretty quickly. AS is typically 5 years in.
Have you managed people? That’s the biggest shift, you become accountable for helping shape your directs.
It really depends on what you’ve learned an accomplished in your 3 years. That speaks louder than the number of years. But as others have said, it typically takes a couple more years of learning to truly be ready for a Supe role.
I did it. But I’m a rock star. Jump agencies - get that promotion - and break your back learning and doing. Do the job now that you want later.
