6th yr at midsize firm - Head of my practice group and mentor invited me to lunch to tell me work was gonna get harder between years 6-9 because people were gonna depend on me more for billable work, management of others and more nonbillable work (marketing and reviewing pre bills). She also mentioned she’d train me to do some of those things. I’m guessing this is good but any tips on navigating this stage except Godspeed?

If you have ambition to become a shareholder/partner this is good. It means they trust or expect you to be able to handle those tasks.

Time to start polishing your case management and time management strategies. Unless your firm is dramatically different, those other responsibilities will be additional to your own billable hour requirement and professional development needs. It is easy to go from a star associate to heavily criticized at that year range.

10000% percent. It happens in the blink of an eye, and unfortunately, you don’t really get to say “But no one taught me how to do this” or “But, non-billable work is taking up so much of my time.” Firms expect to make a lot of money off of their senior associates and they typically aren’t super happy about complaints or, in my experience, able to provide much in the way of solutions.

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

How many billable hours do people in prosecution tend to average each month? I’ve gone through waves of feeling like my billable hours requirement is reasonable to feeling like I’m drowning and can’t possibly do it for that long.

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?
