About a year ago I asked my boss for a raise because my pay doesn’t match my role. I make $56,000 despite 8 years handling admin, AR, customer service, invoicing, and office management. My boss is rarely in and our remote bookkeeper earns more than me (I approve some bills for). He recently hired a remote employee at $80,000, pays commissions to salespeople who do nothing (I'm there contact) and keeps delaying my raise. Now he vaguely promises 10% in April. I feel undervalued. Any thoughts?

You can double your salary if you leave. There are a jobs out there for good admins. and office managers.

It’s hard to imagine another way after 8 years, but take the leap. Good Luck!

I was in a similar situation , years of added responsibilities and requests for a salary increase was ignored,, among others. this was a tough decision yet, I have move on , best decision I have made.

I would have loved to see the expression on your boss's face once you handed him your 2 weeks notice.

Time to go

Update your resume and look for better opportunities. You would still be underpaid with a 10% raise. Your boss is not stepping up to the plate because he thinks you won’t quit.

Time to leave

like

You had a great run with 8 years of experience on your resume. Now, go find somewhere that will double your salary- seriously!

like

Don't quit until you find another job, it's getting harder just harder to find jobs

like

Just find another job. Don’t accept a counter. Your boss doesn’t seem to value you. Could be a few different reasons, but really doesn’t matter why if you aren’t happy where you’re at. If you can’t find another job for the compensation you want then you’ll know you aren’t underpaid. Otherwise, you’ll get an offer and be able to leave. Simple as that.

like

Update your resume, optimize your LinkedIn… And start looking. I stupidly stayed at a company for 14 years. I was an administrative office manager as well. My boss never stepped up because he never thought I would leave. Then one day I did. I doubled my salary in just three years. I changed my resume around to appeal more to executive assistant jobs and pivoted into that career track. A few months ago at the 3 year mark at my current company I started looking again for a new job and now I have a few offers on the table. the highest one is literally $40,000 more than I make right now. I wish I learned when I was younger that the only way to increase your salary is to job hop especially when you are undervalued.

PS- one of the companies already completed the background check on me and reached out to that former employer to do an employment verification. He went to a former colleague and bragged that I must have been let go from my job since somebody was calling him for a reference. That colleague then turned around and told me. It made me realize how miserable of a person he really is.

Hopefully, he gives you that 10% raise… But even if he does, you should still walk out the door. Go where you are appreciated and celebrated

likehelpful

If you prefer to stay, highlight your contributions to the company throughout the last year. Your successes, tasks you do outside of your role responsibilities/job description, etc. Decide what you want salary, bonus, time off, flexible work options and ask for it. Also determine your non-negotiables ie what is required for you to remain with the company.

Do update your resume and test the market. You may find a new organization thrilled to have you or learn you'd rather stay put.

Either way value yourself.

Thank you!

Why do you have a remote book keeper? You could probably take that role over, it’s not hard, and cut costs with the goal of restructuring some of those costs into your pay

like

Our Bookkeeper is related to the owner so that's a no go lol.

As everyone else said, it's time to head for the door.

Thank you all! I truly appreciate your insights and advice. This is in NY, about 30 miles from NYC, so I know there are opportunities for something with better pay.

Definitely. Most opportunities I see are in San Francisco or NYC.

How does your salary compare for the are you're in and for the company size? Having visibility into all this info is great, and sad at the same time.

If you find out that you're making less than you should, use it as your reference. Always communicate your value to the company. If your boss/owner/whomever don't recognize it, then there are greener pastures.

An acquaintance shared a story about his former admin who left the company and got hired someplace else at a higher pay, over $100k. He was excited for her (he had already left the company).

Always be looking.

like

Agreed - you are being undervalued. Maybe you should apply to their role. Or go to a different company.

Have you looked at the salary band for your area? The AR/bookkeeper/customer service/admin roles in some areas would fall in that range. Sales people usually make more, if they sell that is. The remote person hired at 80k, what do they do? What is that salary band?

Maybe you should have a heart to heart with your boss, or do you feel in your heart it is time to move on. 8 years is a long time, sometimes employees want to change and are afraid and stick around. If you are handling all those tasks I would guess it is a small company.

I would personally have a heart to heart and show my accomplishments as to why I deserve an increase along with the documentation showing the local salary band for my role(s). If they truly value you and the band is too low, throw out a number and if they offer nothing, then they don't value you and it is time to move on because someone else will.

likehelpful

A good boss would already know their accomplishments and reward as needed. I never do this, it's too much like begging.

BUT BUT, see what I did for you? lol

He's no professional.

Straight up brutally honest truth…

Your “worth” is likely not perceived as high as the others you mention. The cold hard truth is that perhaps they can find someone else to do the same at that rate of pay.

Find and demonstrate why you are worth more and it will come to you.

Sadly, the hardest working person doesn’t always get the highest pay or recognition.

Open dialogue is key.

Industry vets - in your experience how recession proof is insurance? I was not yet in the job market last recession but I watched my mom get laid off and struggle to find employment during that time for the next 1.5 years. I was wanting to hit the job market towards the end of this year, but now I worry that if I do move companies, the recession could put me in position of last one hired first one fired. Is it better to stay put?
