HR cannot provide that info. They will only confirm that you worked there.
Nobody in your previous employer can legally tell someone that you were laid off. It puts them under the risk of being sued. Dont worry.

Again- seem my comment above. Just be honest. I don’t think you should be as honest as you were in this comment to your prospective employers, but perhaps a better approach is to use the experience as leverage in your interviews. Rather than wanting to hide it and from it.
HR will only confirm your title, start and end date. I have not had anyone questioning the reason why I left my previous job in a background check.
