Any advice on transitioning out of law to anything else that pays around the same (180+)? I’m 3 years out of law school. 1.5 at a small law firm and 1.5 big law. M&A practice group. Too soon to go in house? I hate billable hours and have no life working 2100 hours a year.

2100 hours a year? I’m ready to lateral to your firm now so that I can have a life.

I am so sorry if you are working more than 2100 hours a year. That sounds horrible and I couldn’t imagine! You’re stronger than I am for sure.

There are jobs in the legal field that are 9-5 jobs. They don't pay 180+. I assume the same is true in other fields. You could go to consulting or sales of some sort but your hours / comp will be directly related. To me the key is enjoying what you do. I had a career in government before going to private practice and I loved it until I didn't. Then I went to big firms and lost some flexibility in my schedule but got paid 3x what I made in government. Such is life. Find out what you enjoy, clearly it's not this.

It’s not too soon to go in house, and life is better here, but it’ll be a couple more years before you can get $180k total comp at most places.

like

Hey there! It’s not to early to go in-house but only a few of the bigger tech/finance companies will pay $180k base for a Corp Counsel. However, you may get close with total comp and would definitely have a life.

like

Did you hate the small firm too? Would you like working at a firm where there was actual work life balance, or just done with law firm life?

And thanks can recommend some good recruiters for in-house too.
