We work in integrated teams with generalists. Our project managers are the same as theirs, we refer to them as an EM (engagement manager). We will generally have someone specific who we go to for problem solving though, which will mean more EDs (Engagement Directors). It can be tough working with generalists as McK is quite top-down, “what’s your hypothesis?” Opposing the Design view of, bottom-up, “let’s explore and understanding why?”
The projects have been extremely interesting and as an end to end designer I’ve done everything from, product design, digital design, operating models, org restructuring, product strategy, Omni channel experience, journey transformation.
The hours are slightly shorter when comparing to new BAs by a few hours as you’re not doing the same kind of analysis and modeling. Before I leave though I always clarify with the team if there are things I can support them with before rolling out the door. We are one team aiming for the best answer, we need to come together to figure it out.
What else you got for me?

like

So I’ve produced wire frames, conducted user testing, refined the strategy for implementation, than handed it over to another team to build and I oversaw it.
The problems I’ve seen is that “design” has been brought in as a “fix” and that studies haven’t been scoped properly. So, I’ve been given things to build out because a partner thinks it’s a good idea. It always makes me cautious and I push back a do some diligence around why we are actually building something. That tension in he beginning is difficult to manage. Especially when working with senior people. We have the obligation to decent but that doesn’t mean they’re going to agree with your opinion. You need to have a fact based for your decisions and mapping your research and insights carefully back to the problem you’re trying to solve or the solution will help give you that evidence to say no.
Generalists ask for slides - a lot! I’ll generally sketch something on paper with them, then send it to VGI (they make our slides prettier) to do the slides and return it.
The thing that is great is I’m delivering products and solutions to clients that have been completely thought through from design to implementation and management. My solutions are generally bought by all in the client company. I’ve seen people get promoted just for working alongside us, individuals transform themselves and companies change their culture, all within two to three months.
It’s a really amazing opportunity.
But now my turn, why the questions?

like

You should ask the questions...

like

I haven’t had any issues actually building relationships with any stakeholders. Designer are naturally empathetic people who have the social skills to connect. I’ve only had one generalist BA who said “oh everything is design, whatever.” Everyone else has been quite welcoming. I now have generalists asking to work with me because they’ve seen the client reaction from the solutions. Partners hear that feedback as well and proliferate it out. It’s changing more now then the past couple of years. I thank the McK Digital pioneers.
I’ve built an amazing network spanning countries in 10 months.
Lots of great opportunity to travel.
As a designer, you have three paths that all lead to partner, one leads to building client relationships and winning work, the second is about leading teams and the third is being an expert in your craft.
Amazing opportunities to learn and grow, I’m junior and get a whole lot of experience that wouldn’t happen for 4-5 years elsewhere. We have people who have ran agencies/studios for decades who’ve said things like, “I’ve learnt so much about design that I didn’t know.”
It’s all still hands on as you move up so people really appreciate the work you do.
Depending on the office, you’d be more or less integrated with generalists on a day to day basis. Some will have design hubs which you work out of. Design hubs will have workshop rooms, testing labs, etc

How many years of exp do you have? You don’t seem junior in your responses! So thoughtful

Do you guys have project managers?
What are the projects like- is it product building or design consultants working w generalists?
Are the hours shorter than generalists, or are you expected to stay until whole team leaves?

You’re awesome @M1! So to clarify, you would work with generalists in product design? What do your outputs look like- eg wireframes/ prototypes etc? What are the major challenges beyond what you’ve described? This is really helpful- I appreciate it

That’s amazing and I appreciate your answers. I’m at a design studio within consultancy (think fjord/ DD studio). Got an offer with McK design and wondering what the challenges are and how different it is from where I am now. Want to know if I’m giving up my network for the right reasons/ opportunity.

Sounds like we have the same challenges- managing external and internal stakeholders.

How’s the culture? How are designers viewed within the firm? Do you find generalists respect your POV? And finally, how’s opportunity for growth/ career trajectory?

Mck1 which office have you been based out of?

M1, do you have a burner? I’d love to speak some more if you don’t mind

@M1 I’ve emailed you. Thanks!

Considering a move from a larger BigLaw firm to Fox Rothschild, primarily to work on matters I’m more interested in, but hopefully to also have a slightly better work life balance. I know it would be a pay cut though, and their various covid cuts have me concerned as well.

Any insight from current or former associates? What is firm culture like? Is work life balance decent enough to justify a lower salary?

So I just recently got into dating after a break up 3 months ago. I joined some dating apps and have been getting quite a few matches. I’ve never dated anyone like to a point of going on traditional dates. Basically, I have no clue what to do on a date once i have one planned. Like I’ve been on a few and it’s been just talking but I guess I have no clue what to do after. I’m probably just rambling at this point but basically I need advice on actual dates and how to feel it out and what to do. Ty

So, this is a little awkward, but I recently moved to SD for a fresh start, and honestly, I love this city. My problem is I have been more of a homebody since I moved here and I'm a little intimidated to go out and meet people because I don't feel like I fit in here. I am overweight and this city is full of active, and attractive people. I guess I am wondering what my experience would be if I got out more? I feel like people look at me when I'm in public because I stand out due to my size.
