Frame it as a briefing, talk about the strategy. Talk about the problem you’re trying to solve. Do NOT try to think of concepts. Get the creative team feeling your vibe about what the killer insight is.
Then end the meeting.
No workshoppy design thinking brainstorming crap. You will just be in the way. Let the creative team do what they’re paid to do.
Why? This sounds like a terrible idea, just like most strategy-led brainstorms with creative.
Why would strategy lead a creative brainstorm? Or do you mean you want creatives to help you brainstorm a strategy?
Either seems dicey. Group brainstorming sessions are never a good idea, in any form.
Give some “thought starters” with the brief if you want but then let them do their thing.
👆
Email them the brief and boom your done. No brainstorm needed. Waste of time too.
Is this to find strategic ways in or creative ones? Either way, it's a waste of time. Something we've begun doing is have strategists present ways in to creatives for open discussion before locking in a direction to present to client. We find it's helpful because creatives are generally jaded as fuck and quick to call bullshit on anything that feels like fluff.
MindMeister was a program we used and it was helpful to do a virtual sticky note kind of charting exercise. Not ideal, but most everything right now is not ideal. Good luck!
It depends on what you’re trying to solve and what you hope to walk away with. I agree that trying to come away with a campaign idea from a group brainstorm will be relatively unproductive. If it’s a broader, more open-ended problem (like exploring several consumer insights and broad thoughts on how a brand could solve for those) you might have more luck. My suggestion is don’t have people shout out ideas over zoom. Give them sixty seconds to write down ideas - whatever comes to mind even if they think it’s dumb - and then read out the best/most interesting of those to the group.
To echo the above comments creatives tend to be annoyed by / uncomfortable with group brainstorming. It puts a lot of pressure on us to work in a way that we know doesn’t lead to our best thinking. The more introverted people in the group tend to clam up and they may be some of your strongest thinkers. That’s why I would suggest a time limit and a no-judgments kind of thing.
Have clear goals for the brain storm. Lay them out at the begining and keep everyone in track. Save some time at the end to set next steps.
Brainstorms where it's just 'list idea time' can be really unproductive without structure and action.
Don’t.
Don’t do it
