Unfortunately it’s a real thing. Clients are cutting budgets everywhere
We already have a polite way of rejecting somebody, it’s “we really enjoyed meeting you and this was a tough decision but we went with another candidate, we’d love to consider you for other roles in the future if you are interested.” We reject candidates all the time, it’s really not a situation that’s awkward enough to warrant making up an elaborate lie.
If you receive any explanation for what’s happening in the process (as opposed to just silence), it’s probably true.
I think people forget that recruiters and hiring managers actually reject *the majority* of candidates they meet, so this is in no way a socially terrifying situation that requires lying.
Yes this is legit and happens quite a bit.

Wondering the same. Was told there was a pause on hiring. Wasn't sure if that was true or a polite way of rejecting me.
That just happened to me last week. Can't be sure if that's the real reason but need to breathe out & move on...!
