I’ve had this opportunity twice in the last 18 months. My hr department keeps coming to me and I considered it for a while before turning it down. From a lot of attorneys I’ve spoken to, it’s very difficult to come back. If your goal is to stay in HR, it’s a good move but if you want to come back to being a lawyer, your options may be limited. For me, I love employee relations and policy development; I didn’t want to be dealing with comp, and taken mapping and other issues that make up a large portion of an hrbp’s job. I ended up telling my svp that if they ever established a ER group, I would lead it but not before.
Also, I realized I like sitting on the lawyer side of the desk. Researching the law and giving advice- did I want to actually doing firings or dealing with employee issues directly? Feel free to pm me if you want to chat further

I left HR to become a lawyer. Personally, I think HR is a very negative space. You have less control because you rely on the legal team and other decision makers to act based on your recommendations. No one is happy and you're either the fun killer or you have to help make strategic decisions about firing people.
I’ve worked with people who have made this move. Also, I’ve interviewed someone for my podcast who did this—search for The Former Lawyer Podcast and look for the episodes with Helynn Nelson. Good luck!
