Same here.
After I see what the SCs on my project do, I understand why I was placed in the C role. The SCs here are comparable to the Managers I worked with at ACN.
@D6 did you get promoted though and how long did it take?
Same thing happened to me. I took the job and was promoted after 1.5 years. 5 years later I was promoted to SM (2 years at SC, 3 at M). Very glad I started at C level, as expectations are higher for SCs at D compared to where I came from. Allowed me to start out as a high performer and build a good rep, as opposed to struggling from the 1st day. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint - starting out as C definitely set me up better for long term success.
This is the smart answer. If you have experience leading small teams, independently running small work streams, make a great first impression and network well, then SC could be appropriate. That said, far better to come in as a high performer and knock it out of the park. I joined Deloitte as a C, was promoted that year, and then spent 2 years at SC.
You can’t compare SC at a small firm with Deloitte. Deloitte is known for this with levels. A sc at Deloitte is a a manager elsewhere. Deloitte is #1 of the big 4.
That’s C level comp C4
Pro
This is classic deloitte lol- I have a friend here with 7YOE who was brought in at consultant level
Not all experience is the same, was that 7 years at a consulting firm? big 4 or mbb? Or is it industry ?
This happened to me, but I also hated my old job so I just went for it, brought me in at a higher base so took a step back to hopefully go forward
We would rather bring you in a bit low and accelerate your promotion than have you struggle and out counsel the first year
This is expected. You can’t map SC of other Big 4 firms to that of Deloitte. For eg. SC of EY is equivalent to C of Deloitte. Expectations are much higher & progression b/w levels now takes longer as well. For eg. A to C is now 3 years and so on.
Years of experience is not what determines the appropriate level, the types of experiences and the skill set you have developed as a result does.
Also keep in mind that titles don’t always translate 1-1 between firms.
Thank you! I'm honestly going to take the offer- I just wanted to know if this was based on my performance at the interview.
This literally happened to me recently.
I got referred to Deloitte and told them my salary expectations which aligned more with SC. I interviewed well and had good feedback so I was confident in my ask.
After my interviews, HR called saying they wanted to bring me in as a C at the high end of the pay band (which was slightly lower than my current salary). I stuck to my guns and said it'd be a hard decision and HR said to leave it with them and they'd see what they could do.
They came back a couple of days later with an SC role and 10k increase from initial discussions which I accepted.
I'm starting there in a couple of weeks now.
Based on the comments here, I'm a little worried that the leap my be a bit too much but we'll see. Worst case, I leave the firm in 1 year with SC - Deloitte on my CV and just lateral into a different consulting firm.
I'm based in Canada. Where are you working now and what was the process like with salary changes?
They might pay you what you ask but will not bend on the title . Don’t waste your time in negotiation- just say you can only move forward if they offer a SC role. Promotion from C to SC has also become more difficult now with 3 years being the norm.
Thank you, I'm willing to accept C if they match my pay and thanks for the tip on how difficult promotion has become
I’m lowkey starting to think it’s a hiring tactic to bring experienced people on and pay them less than they should be. Even if the levels aren’t the same, why would a SC somewhere else have the then restart the 3 year process of going from C to SC at Deloitte? The same process a newly promoted C would be going through? It makes no sense
I thought maybe it was me but you’re now the 3rd person I’ve heard of getting this offer in the last week alone.
It definitely feels like a tactic. Why post a SC position if you're not going to hire an SC? lol
This is very common for experienced hires at Deloitte.
I wouldn’t take it, go for SC👍
I am facing the same issue. I am a 3rd year Senior Consultant at B4 and have over 5 YOE in a specialized sector. They told me the SC position is filled up and only C position is available.
FWIW, the partner reached out to me.
Okay I feel better that this is a standard practice at Deloitte and I'm not like a shockingly stupid candidate.
Do you come from another consulting firm? B4 specifically?
Not limiting for promotion necessarily... But for raises it could be. Then again, depends on the offer/group
Seems very simple. Tell them SC or nothing then just go apply somewhere else...
It happens. Most firms will try and start you out at a lower level when you’re coming from industry.
