When I covered HR as a client, HR Business Partners were the best paid, followed by Compensation and People Analytics. L&D were compensated more highly than Recruiters for the most part - particularly at the higher levels. This was for a Fortune 50 retailer.
However, recruiters seem to be in high demand as of late which makes it a hot job, similar to D&I roles. This means my previous experience may not be relevant anymore...
Either way, you should have a conversation with your manager about your expectations on compensation given this new information on your colleague. Worst case, start applying for a few roles externally and you will see if you're off market fairly quickly!
You are being taken advantage of. I know how you feel. I was asked to cover as interim manager for several other departments for months, without a salary adjustment. I have also served as recruiter and hr generalist. I took the experience and ran with it, leveraged it for a better/higher position out of that place. Update your resume and walk away.
Yes to both questions.
Definitely think you are underpaid if a recruiter with no experience is making more than you.
Hmmm, you're not off base but I would be careful to try and compare your role to something that isn't apples to apples. You took on those functions in the interim but that wasn't on your initial JD. Good recruiters can help boost a company's productivity by sourcing the right talent so they are pretty valuable.
If you feel taken advantage of, LEAVE! That will not work for your mental health in the long run and it's better for the company too not to have a jaded employee

I second VP1. Early to mid career recruiters do make more than their peers in HR, especially if they’re doing executive or technical recruiting.
At the higher levels (Director and above) it’s usually HRBPs, Comp & Benefits, or other HR COEs that make the most.
