Amazing - a similar question has been asked dozens of times in this bowl.

likefunny

Seriously! This isn’t vague policy though.

like

I suspect firms are quite good at communicating policy and people just don’t read emails.

like

I think you’re right that it is a mix.

Recent IconRecent

You could probably get away with it, but it is against policy and could be grounds for termination

likehelpful

No you cannot. It’s a tax thing and big big issue if you get caught. Just take PTO

likehelpful

Just take the vacation as planned?

like

You can. But make sure to send pictures. Have fun.

like

Not necessary. Amy will share it with him.

Usually companies respect and will allow you to take pre-planned vacations even if you don't have the pto accrued - just enjoy your vacation friend

likehelpful

No, you cannot work out of the country. Especially if you are GPS!

like

I don't believe it's a violation of U.S. tax law, but an issue with specific projects and data concerns for Deloitte. Correct me if I'm wrong. If there are any tax laws that one would violate, I'm interesting in finding out what those laws are.

helpfulfunny

I have more years of direct experience with international tax situations than you probably have consulting experience. There’s a difference in final tax liability for an individual, and what triggers a tax event that requires the firm to act. You’re overlooking that, at a minimum.

likefunny

Only if you send a formal invitation to Dan.

funny

Yeah you can do it but why waste your time in Cancún working? Just take pto you’re allowed to go negative and it’s normal to do so if you’re new to the firm. That said, I worked from Playa del Carmen for over a month last year and know several others who have done the same. I also did a couple Mexico trips pre pandemic for a couple long weekends for alt travel booking through Deloitte’s travel portal. Deloitte at least does not care so long as you send emergency contact info etc to the internal team that handles international travel. They will just email you travel advisories etc. You’re not supposed to be actually working / charging time overseas for tax reasons but if you just make sure to charge time to your home town and not to Mexico no one will care. You can also clear it with your project pmd. They aren’t going to mind (as long as you aren’t gps)

funny

You cannot do it per firm APR. Absolutely grounds for termination.

like

I found out by Monday that one of my team members logged in from Mexico on Friday. One time thing, maybe kind of mistake. But still had to use PTO since we can bill for time outside us.

like

What firm? How did you find out?

Don’t do it. Your client may have restrictions on data export.

Just take pto don’t risk your great career at Deloitte for 2-3 days at cancun
It will create tax issues when you do timesheet

Outside of salary, what other things have people negotiated as new hire, I’ve seen more PTO, working from home, sign on bonus, even stock options? How have you negotiated these things especially if you are new to negotiating? Any books or references that gave you a great foundation. I’ve been on my job search from sometime now and getting more interviews, I’m willing to take a pay cut, but wonder what else I can ask for outside of more pay? Thanks

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?

Hey everyone! I’m interviewing for an HR Generalist role at a Fintech company, this will be their first HR hire and will be reporting to the CFO. I got invited to a second round interview to meet the team to ensure that it’s a good culture fit. I would love to know any thoughts on what I should ask or do to ensure that I am great fit. I left a good impression on the CFO but would to see what else so can do when meeting with the team since it’ll be a 2.5 hour meet up. I’m really excited!

Agent indicated the owner would be open to having the house cleaned but I would need to have the house professionally cleaned when I moved out (that was fine w me). I just received the bill from the owner for $250, which is super annoying bc there was no expectation communicated that I would foot the bill for this, more so bc the cleaner did a LOUSY job. It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
