As a new business owner (<1 year), how long was it before you were generating enough revenue to comfortable cover your expenses, then to hire folks, and eventually take a personal salary?

Depends on the business. We were making money and paying ourselves immediately. (The business was buying, operating, and redeveloping a strip mall.) Another venture didn’t turn out so well. We bought a bunch of class C multifamily with the hopes of turning it around, but couldn’t. We took all the cash we could out of it and didn’t do much maintenance and sold just breaking even. The larger point: it really depends on what business you’re in.

Honestly, not bought them in a blue state in the bluest city therein. I’m not going on a rant about politics here, but it was extremely difficult to get rid of non-payers. I even got licensed as a lawyer in the state (it has reciprocity with my own) to file evictions under my name so I wouldn’t have to hire local counsel. (Most eviction lawyers are horrible—but that’s a different conversation.) the other problem is in that type of housing, people who rent there actually couldn’t keep up with rent increases. Their incomes wouldn’t support it. (We’re talking Section 8 here.) So any maintenance or improvements wouldn’t have translated to higher rents/better tenants. But I did learn a very valuable trick is to charge non-refundable move-in fees in lieu of a security deposit. (That state, Illinois, permitted it, others like Massachusetts don’t.)

I’m paying myself, paying off starting debt, and not accruing any new debt. I have zero interest in hiring but looking forward to being business-debt free to increase my take home.

Thank you ☺️

I hope you are staying sane wearing all the hats. Organization and time management are key, correct? Kudos to your success continuing and growing!

Really depends on whether or not your business is an online or brick-and-mortar one

How about starting out as b&m and expanding to online within a year?

I’m coming up on 6 months, and it isn’t now. I have a lot of things coming up in the next few months, and hoping to get a little closer to that.

I feel this deeply! Thank goodness I still have a full time job. Good thing...salary. bad thing...cant focus full time on own business.

I got an offer at Nokia, and my new manager said that she wanted to put me in the higher salary bracket however the HR insisted that we lowered the range. That caused me to receive a much lower salary than expected. Should I renegotiate even when my manager said that she tried giving me more. Does HR really play that big of a role in this?

Hi everyone.
Just reached final on-site round for a Senior Manager position in the logistics department. Role is for Amazon UK. Recruiter is asking me now for my expected compensation (base salary + total comp) via email. Any idea what to aim for?

I don’t know the level but was aiming £80k base, +15% bonus. If I don’t fall under their budget, would I automatically be removed from candidates?
Any tips are appreciated!

Hello, after doing some research I believe I’m being underpaid. About 4 months ago HR did a market analysis for my role. They bumped my salary for about $2k. I’m a mid-level Executive assistant with 6 years of experience and currently supporting 5 executives at a fortune 50 company. One C level and 4 Vice Presidents. I’m currently making $61,000 with bonus included. Based on my research I should at least be making $71,400. I have a check in with my boss tomorrow and I am asking for a raise.

For startup founders/people with a successful side project: How did you get the idea/inspiration for your business? I’m currently working at a Series B startup and my end goal has always been to found my own startup, but I graduated from college 2.5 years ago and I still have not had any great ideas cross my mind. I do spend a fair amount of time brainstorming. I don’t want to continue working here forever, but I’m struggling to generate that “this is it” idea to build a company for. Any advice?
