It depends on how they approach it. If a candidate is vague about their motivations or timeline, or suddenly ghosts after an offer, it can raise red flags. That said, most recruiters get it—sometimes people are trying to validate their market worth. But it’s all about how it’s handled. If someone is upfront and respectful, even if it ends in a counteroffer situation, it doesn’t leave a bad taste. Transparency usually earns more trust than people realize.
