Know what’s better than awards on a resume? Tenure at good places. Three years. Four years. Five years. Proof that you can swim. That you can deal with the reality of working in advertising, not just the fake projects for Cannes. Proof that leadership didn’t think you were useless. Awards are great, but they’re not representative of what the job is 90 percent of the time. I can tell from your book how good you are. I don’t need the validation of some trophy to see if you’re good. It’s more important to see you can join an agency, build equity in yourself, and nurture relationships with the client and the account people.
I like the tenure mode, however I’ve been affected by involuntary unemployment at agencies where I thought I’d be there for 5 years because I thought I found ‘’my place”…no control or say in it, so hope recruiters understand that and don’t hold me accountable for poorly run businesses : )
Your note is hopeful. Since awards are another realm of politics.
What dept are you in? Strat and account should get pretty detailed with business outcomes and it’s okay to go into 2 pages if you’ve been in the biz for many years. The creative resumes I’ve seen are much more sparse, probably since the focus is on the portfolio. Portfolios that present each reference as a case study tend to me more compelling imo.
FWIW I think you can cover it as award winning blah blah without needing to get into all the detail. Also agree if you can talk about outcomes you’ve been a. Part of driving goes a long way. I also think it depends on the role you’re applying for, some companies if you’re going brand side are more focused on creativity and creative culture if they’re trying to change the culture and narrative around their brands (like a Kraft Heinz has been although their business is in the dumps so not sure awards are really helping them.
A creative. For over 10 years. I’d love to keep to 1 pg, but I feel so much is expected to be detailed per job. You know, prove yourself, for the job description requirements. My awards are on my LI profile & my book, so wondering since resumes can be the 1st interaction if I lessen my chances or don’t get considered for an interview without awards listed.
Treat your resume like any creative brief. Disrupt it. Do something unusual. It’s such a secondary thing for creative, might as well use it as a platform to apply your own unrestricted flavor of creativity.
