Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. Is this too big of a step backwards in career? Should he push back and see if it gets him anywhere? If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

I never bring my work laptop on vacation.
Don’t reply. You are out of office. Sometimes
People send meeting request to groups and don’t pay attention who is out. Don’t respond to those. I get my email on my phone, so it’s nice if there is a real emergency, I can respond. (But you’re an accountant. There are no real accounting emergencies. No one is going to die.) And since im checking things, I’m not sorting thru 200 emails when I get back. If you made the error or dropped the ball, then of course fix it on your PTO if you can. But then don’t bill that time to PTO. And of course, you can always say “I’m at my mom/friend/grandmother/mistress’s house painting the ceiling and my laptop is at my house. I can’t look at that until I get home tomorrow”
Rising Star
Oof, you are making it easy for them to take advantage of you. I pretty much announce a week or two before that I’ll be on vacation. And I’ll keep bringing it up. And i set OOO auto response. Then I don’t turn my laptop on and turn my work phone off. Works great, and I still got promoted
At the point when you set your emails to automatic replies and turn off your laptop.
Stop bringing you laptop on vacation. Currently in Florida and my laptop is in Boston. If your calendar is blocked off with out of office the meeting invites auto decline. They will survive if you don't join
Depending on what you do in your role and where you are going (driving v flying. Local v international, etc) it wouldn’t hurt to bring your laptop along. But get Outlook on your phone to check mails. (You can flip through them in the morning/evening/whatever. Don’t be checking constantly). I’m not going to bring my laptop on an international trip, and probably not some US flights. During my vacations, I am usually out from 8am to 11pm. So really no chance to do any work anyway. But if you have to boot up your computer and connect to check your emails you might be tempted to do a little work since you are already at your computer.
Simply the difference between having a job vs a career. If you don't like it get a $15/hour job at McDonald's.
My favorite OOO. “Hi, thanks for your email, I am out of the office and will have no access to email but I will answer your email promptly on my return XX.” No access to email doesn’t always mean you don’t have service like a cruise. You could genuinely set the mental and physical boundary that you will not access email therefore do not have access to it.
Flexibility is the new norm, a full end to end PTO without disturbance from work will not be possible, nor we would like to do massive catch up on work after PTO ...
I don’t expect my team to work while they’re on PTO. And I don’t do much while I’m off. You really need that time to recharge and spend time with your family or friends. Having said that, my out of office tells everyone when I’ll be back (I usually say it’s the day after I actually plan to get back so I have a day to deal with all the emails, etc), says that I’ll have extremely limited access to emails, and asks that they call another member of their service team (if an external email) or call another member of my practice team (if an internal email). Most everyone has my cell number if there’s an absolute emergency, but I rarely get calls. Then, I dedicate time about halfway through my vacation to check emails. But that’s mostly because I don’t want to get back to the office after being one a whole week with a thousand emails to go through.
You also have to set your boundaries - once you start working on vacation, that becomes the expectation. No one will create boundaries on your behalf.
Just some ideas. For what it’s worth, I have some people on my team that will respond to emails their whole vacation. I’m not impressed with that at all because, eventually, their work product will suffer as will their attitude about their job.
This sounds like such a first world conversation
Vacation 1...Yellowstone during winter 30 below no cell phones no service. Unless u have a heated holster no satellite phones.... Vacation #2 is a 4 day rafting trip Grand Canyon Colorado river. No cell forget laptops no running water or electricity. Vacation 3 is key west during fantasy fest when 30 people you don't know show up for your pool party..no laptops due to security concerns. My out of office reflects the above. And my team had my cell. Contact my team who..if possible... can reach me
When you plan your PTO, always consider the type of work that may need you and plan for some one to cover you if possible....PTO is necessary for work/life balance.

Auto reply. Look into it.
Think of the next person they’d send that email if you were let go. They have a plan B. Let the firm use it.
100% don't reply.
Just dont. People will get the hint very quickly.
Find another job. Place is toxic..
