Big4 vs Regional vs Small Firms

I am a Tax Senior at Big4. Just wondering whats the drawback of working at Regional or even small firms? i just need less stress and decent salary.
Not looking to grow much into Career ( want to build a business on side).

Is it worth to stay in Big4? or should i move to regional or even small firms?

My experience is smaller firms work just as much, with much less perks.. but that of course could vary.

Make sure to look thoroughly into the group within the firm you're going to. Certain mid-size firms will hire you under the disguise of better hours when you'll ironically work more than you did at a Big 4. Also, make sure you absolutely nail down what work you will expect to get during the talks because the mid-tier I came from lies about the work to reel people in and then forces you to work for teams you didnt sign up for.

I've heard other mid-tier firms actually do have good WLB though so don't let that deter you. Just make sure you do your research.

PwC 1 speaks truth. Going through exactly that now.

I started at a smaller-ish firm (80 people). No regrets, learned a lot and met close friends that I will always have. But the service models at small firms can be different - lots of hand holding of clients and helping with any kind of issue they might have (SALT, sales tax, more advisory/consulting, etc.) since not all the clients have sophisticated accounting teams in place. You can get a great experience at a small firm and work less hours, but there’s less pay and no guarantee of working less hours outside tax season.

I spent 7 years at big 4 (different service line) and found my WLB and that of those ahead of me to be unsustainable for me personally. I've been at RSM for a year and it's been a huge difference. Consider taking 1 step down (to an RSM/grant Thornton/BDO), which will provide more exposure to smaller clients but keep a bit more career optionality than a very small firm as a stepping stone. Maybe you'll find you can't stand the really small clients that would be your sole base at smaller firms

I think depends what business you're building on the side... If it's mainly working with the public, then not a huge deal to be from a small firm. On the other hand, if it's working with businesses and executives, they might respect your experience more from a large firm.

Every situation is different. People, rightly or wrongly are biased towards Big4 experience when looking at exit opportunities. Its harder to move on from smaller firms, but smaller firms can provide certain lifestyle benefits. You generally give up benefits with smaller firms. Regional firms vary greatly. Lots of pressure to grow, fewer resources.

I have two questions. I have 10 years of experience in multiple sectors and I have been trying to gain a leadership position. I am attempting my PHR this summer but what are some tips in order for me to obtain a leadership position? Also, how long does it take to obtain another position out of state? I am trying to move to Houston but I don’t want to move until I am confident I can obtain a position in the city before packing up and leaving.

Hi. I’m in need of advice and encouragement. I’m currently working as a public defender(2nd year) but I would love to pursue a solo private practice. I would like to leave the public defender because I am ready to make more money and I am no longer feeling the fulfillment I once felt. I have a family and work-life balance is a priority. What is a good way to gain experience in other areas of law as a solo practitioner? What areas of law are best for maintaining a work-life balance?

I’m what you could call an over achiever. Damn near straight A’s all my life without really trying. Graduated school straight to a six figure job, wrapping up my masters, and I’m in real estate & stocks. I work out often, so I’m fit, and I’m considered a “chad” I guess you could say

I get a lot of praise for these things and sometimes I just don’t know what to say. I say thank you of course (cont)

I got a call from the Google recruiter about my L7 em interview Google She said I did overwhelmingly good on all interviews except one had mixed feedback on a system design. No surprise because it was not a good interview. The recruiter said i had a choice to go to hiring committee, give referrals they could call about my system design or take another system design interview. I’m not confident about the system design because of the bad experience I had with the previous interviewer. What should I do?

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Thoughts on making the shift?
