I went reduced hours to 50%, but I’m not near FIRE and expect I’ll go back full time once the kids are older.
50% is significant. I tried 75% before but it didn’t feel like much of a change because I still stressed about work 100%.
Similar situation and I can’t think of anything that will give me the flexibility, time, lower stress, etc. that I am looking for. Planning to try to go reduced hours (60% is my aim) and see how that goes.
Sure!
Can you get your own clients? Maybe go solo and take on a case or few at a time. That’s my retirement plan. (I am not Biglaw.)
Not really for the work I do now, which is mostly high stakes commercial litigation for large corporate clients. I’d have to retool a lot, which is appealing in its own way and possible, but does not seem very FIRE-y. I’m thinking barista FIRE but JD version?
Have you looked at government? Also, can I DM you (fellow BL FIRE enthusiast here)?
Take a 30% pay cut and go midlaw but with less billables? I bet 1650-1850 will feel like a vacation compared to 2100+ in biglaw lol.
Not big law (came from mid-law) but I went in-house and work a respectable 9-5 job. On the slow days, I am so thankful that I don’t need to worry about my hours. Litigation jobs are harder to come by, but can be found. In the meantime, keep saving. I’m not at coast but can still save what I need to hopefully retire by 60. I’m not stress free, but have less stress.
