Am M, make hiring decisions all the time. Just have to let the PPMD know
Usually need a partner to “ok” it at the end of the day
Hiring into the firm, there’s usually got to be a Partner or MD to sign off. If you’re bringing someone onto a project that is already a D employee, it’s totally common for that to happen without PMD involvement.
Yes we do. Why?
Not Deloitte but I’ve hired a number of people without partner input
No
In my group, typically 4-6 people interview candidates and there are always at least 2 partners involved in the process. So unless the Ps are in agreement to extend an offer, I can’t see how non Ps would solely be able to make that call.
I 100% agree. At EY you can not even consider hiring anyone unless a committee interviews them and has at least 3 PPEDs day yes and then it is still 100% up to the Managing Partner for that practice
My friend just did an interview with an SM and associate. His understanding was that it was already final round (I was doubtful). Based on the above, I'm guessing it's safe to say that he has more rounds?
For GPS HC consulting. Nope. A partner still has to approve, usually Sean, but not interview., they only have have to have a PPMD interview someone hiring as a SM. Used to be potential managers but they had changed to rule like a year ago.
Your friend is likely now waiting just for the recruiters to finish writing the offer for the partner to sign. It could be questioned, comp or level debated. Maybe even denied, but 95% it is just a process now of getting the signatures.
PS, if they are called back it is likely to interview with another group or a specific hiring manager to be 100 there is a role to staff directly into rather than to the bench.
I would amend my earlier statement saying I hired folks without partner “input”. What I meant was involvement. There is a role, I’m a later interview depending on the roles seniority and I pass along a go/nogo. Most of the time it’s rubber stamped.
The question being asked is open to multiple interpretations.
Do I make hiring decisions? Yes. Can I hire independent of a Partner’s approval? No although the approval is only a formality - and upfront the process, there’s clarity on FTE positions to be filled. I’ve been v active with hiring and there’s not been a situation where the partner overrode consensus M or SM recommendations only on issues of business need changes.
In my practice, there is an SM that is basically a managing director without the title. His PML has even said that. I think they’re just waiting for this one guy to retire to promote that SM. The level of autonomy he has is formidable
Partner approval or through talent
