9 year old and $45k.

Aiming for $100k by 18 which should be easily achievable. Opened account at 2 month old and put in $200/month.

likehelpful

Yeah good luck. Loans today for kids that are tied to their parents are minimal. The burden has shifted to the parents so kids don’t rack up debt in college. As an example, my kid could get 5k a year in loans and I could pick up the rest of her costs as a parental loan at 6% interest. If I had wanted to go the loan route and of course the juice is running day 1 on those loans.

6 years: $60k
4 years: $45k

Just do the best you can.

7&2 18k& 17k.. i know I am behind but I am really hoping they drop out and start a business instead of getting a job.

like

Mine have similar numbers but are 7 and 6 yo. I’m putting in $500pm not going over that they can pay for the rest. I’d expect them to have around $80-100k each

6 months, $10k. My retirement is priority and all set. Plan to front load the 529 the first couple years, then let it ride. I don’t plan on fully funding college, since I don’t know if my kid will go. If we have a gap come college time, I’ll find money from another account.

like

Similar situation to the OP, but a few years ahead kid wise. We are currently debating when to let it ride. Sitting at ~$60k at age 3 and aiming to fund 4 years in state. Anything else is a bonus.

like

12 yr old, $36k, just started a little over 4 years ago with $250 a month and am contributing $800 a month now. Hoping to increase to $1k a month next year.

like

3 yr old - $95k, 5 yr old - $195k.

like

19 years old. 150K and decreasing

6 year old and at about 30k - but not in a 529. Just a normal brokerage account, his grandfather will likely end up wanting to pay for school anyway lol

4yo, 20k
2yo, 9k

Contribute 500/mo per kid

like

9 yrs old, $100k current balance and hoping to get this to $300k in the next 9 yrs by doing $1k/mo plus growth

In 9 yrs, after adjusting for 3% inflation, $300k has the buying power of $230k in current dollars, so that’s basically $60k/yr for 4 yrs in current dollars — to cover tuition, room & board, etc. If my kid goes to a less expensive school, then leftovers can be for grad/masters/etc, or be used for nephews/nieces or future grandkids.

like

17 $130k. 19 $35k (used $60k)

I invested the first in one of those age based funds and the second in a mid-cap fund. The returns were 8% and 13% respectively. I’m going to pay the next two semesters out of pocket to let the remaining balance grow. Also once my 17yo determines where she will go to college, I might move some money from one account to the other.

1.5, $7k

13&11-170k

5 - $175k
3 - $75k

6 an 3.5, both at about 55k

12 year-old ($137k) and 9 year-old ($106k). Contribute 5k/yr each plus I have a brokerage account going that will be shared between the two of them that has about $275k in it currently.

Idea was to cover most (if not all of UG) with the 529 and the brokerage will cover anything else that we want to help them with.

2 yr old -$33k. Contributing 1500/month. Aim to cover 4 yr private college

I have utma accounts for my 2:
9yo 54k
6.5yo-38k

Currently contributing 500/month each with plans to increase to 8-10k/ year if I get job I'm hoping for

3 - $9k

Why do a 529 as opposed to a Roth? 2yr; 529 - $600; Roth $10k

You should be saving for your own retirement in addition to or before saving for your kids’ college.

5 and 2. 27k combined

19month old- $15k

My fiancé and I are first time home buyers (both 28 yo) and would like to know what makes more sense: buying an expensive home or buying a lower cost one. Our combined income is around 400K but since we just began working post school, our savings are only $70K right now (also 30K in student loan debt). We’re buying in a high property tax state where taxes could be 4% (think 12K taxes on 600K home). Should we get a 500K house or get a 800K - 900K (which represents most I’m willing to spend)
