Too many facts left out. One time grant of RSUs for 200k Or is it annual? What part of the Bay Area, how long of a commute can you stand? Do you have a family? Can you stand Bay Area liberalism (it’s extremely bad unless you are a far left wacko). My gut says DON’T DO IT!!! It will likely be a down grade in quality of life
You should live pretty comfortably in Fremont for that amount. But be prepared for horrible traffic going anywhere else in the bay from there. I agree with EY2 though, the Bay Area is one of the most incredible places to be so it will be worth it.
Go for it. The bay is way different than Texas for sure but it's an amazing place and even if it isn't a forever move, you won't regret going there. Especially with no kids. If you had kids it would be a dif story
Interesting fact. If you are a family of four making $105k in sf or San Mateo county you are considered low income by hud and qualify for housing assistance...
Dude...150k is comfortable anywhere in the world unless you have some extravagant lifestyle.
I grew up in Burlingame (which is on the Peninsula) and the Bay Area was an amazing place to grow up/live. A lot of people are definitely priced out now though, and I wouldn’t move out there making only 150k a year.
Fremont is fine esp if u live near your office. Freeway commuting is worse than LA these days. And yes you can live comfortably on that amount but if your wife doesn’t work, then you may be slightly below average tbh.
I lived here for 5 years (downtown), had the time of my life, and don’t regret a single thing, but I don’t plan to raise a family in the Bay Area. Will probably head down to LA for that
@KPMG1: for two people, in a high COL city? I guess you can live comfortably if you don't plan on saving any money. You clearly don't know how ridiculous rent can be. You can probably make your 25% down payment on a giant house in a low COL city with one year of average rent in SF.
It’s doable with that type of salary and not having any kids; but I wouldn’t expect to move there and purchase a house. You’ll also have to get used to paying CA’s high taxes — not just income, but sales, gas, car registration, etc. I grew up in the Bay Area, but never went because cost of living. The thought of being house poor with a nightmare commute or being a perpetual renter were are enough to keep me away. However, I do miss being close to Tahoe, the city, beaches, various sports teams, wineries, etc.
The same threshold in Dallas: $58,700.
@EY1 one time grant of $200K. In the Fremont area. We are recently married (no kids) and would expect that my spouse should be able to find something soon too.
You can live in Bay Area with $150k base and $60k bonus, but will likely be renting a 1 bedroom, which start at $3k month.
@EY5 — that’s true if he’s fine renting a very modest apartment. That may be a hard pill to swallow for someone coming from Texas where houses are large and relatively very inexpensive. He’ll also be coming from a no state income tax state to one of the highest in the US. The RSU comp will take time to vest and the bonus isn’t guaranteed. $150K doesn’t go very far once you consider taxes, medical insurance, retirement deductions, etc. eat up around 50% of gross pay. That leaves around 6.5K per month for all other expenses/savings.
150k you’ll be fine. Unless you want a life your pocket can’t afford
Not worth it! My husband and I moved from Dallas, TX to just outside the Bay Area and the taxes are killing us. We doubled our incomes coming here but COLA went up significantly as well. We can’t even imagine living in the Bay Area and hardly ever visit because of the traffic. Can’t wait to move back to Texas!!
