Consulting during corona - I’m interesting in switching to consulting and interviewed with a few firms (pre-COVID) and got an offer plus a few offers put on pause. It would be helpful to get clarity on what the industry is like now and if anyone recommends still making the switch or staying put (especially interested in Deloitte, Accenture, PWC, EY human capital practices)

Stay put! Firms are laying off all kinds. First in is usually first out...

I would stay put until the economy levels out. Firms are still laying off right now.

If your job is secure right now, i definitely wouldn’t switch. B4 is notorious for mass layoffs across the bored and sometimes your past contributions are not even taken into account. If you do decide to go be sure to perform your due diligence on the team. Ask about everyone’s utilization, what metrics you have, projects in the pipeline etc.. all of it.

like

Thanks all! Very helpful. Anyone able to provide insight on wether Deloitte’s HC, PwC’s P&O, EY’s PA and Accenture’s T&O have been impacted by layoffs in the news?

Stay away from all of them. Seriously. Not kidding at all.

OP, one of the first lessons of consulting is to know how to ask targeted and effective questions.

Might behoove you to ask about one or two practices first (your favored) and build out from there (via a targeted compare and contrast) instead of the list you mention above.

Besides that, welcome to consulting!

Start laying the groundwork and aim for joining mid spring. If you start networking, getting to know the culture and lingo, get some great relationships going, it will be an easy transition to the right place in the spring when things ease back up. Right now it’s messy but people have more time to talk/network.

I am a Product Owner with 4+ YOE. I have been in my current role for 4 months and have continuously found that this role and company are not the right fit for me. Looking back on everything they said during the interview process it turns out that the culture, product and role are not aligning with anything we discussed. They have added on responsibilities and I have continuously expressed to my direct manager how I feel.

Additional Posts in Consulting

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
