Could use some perspective from folks here! I joined as in-house counsel from V20 recently. When I interviewed for the position, the hiring manager explained the team structure and broadly gave me a career path in the company. The day I joined I learned of a long term secondee who’s around my same level that they’re planning on bringing in with the exact same job description as me. I feel extremely frustrated and had I known this before joining, I might have made a different decision. Contd.

Could be a good thing! Is it possible it might be an opportunity more than a liability? A lot of games have room for more players rather than being zero-sum, especially if you view the game as bigger than just your legal dept. You two can rise up together and be good colleagues (and maybe even friends), and help each other level up. Or one of you may leave eventually. Maybe you’ll go back to the firm and your potential rival could be a client (or vice versa). Dangling carrots of potential career progression (particularly to new hires) are frequently illusory promises, and depend on results and circumstances.

It sounds to me like there is a ton of work to be done. Trust me, they didn’t hire the other attorney just to have a competition. My co-workers who are around my level are people I actually like and get along with and we help each other out. I’d say this is great to have someone to learn the ropes with and overcome the learning curve.

What’s the concern exactly? What are you hoping to get by raising it to your manager?

I'm also curious.

What is the problem here? Your reaction sounds a little snowflake-y to me. Were you under the impression that you would be the only one with the Staff Attny/Sr. Counsel/Assistant Gen Counsel title in the legal dept? Legal departments do not have $100k to throw away on extra headcount just so they can play head games with their current staff. If they hired this second person, then it’s because the workflow is so heavy that they need a second pair of hands - it’s not meant to be an insult to you.

I’m taking the SPHR in less than 2 months and haven’t started studying for it. How difficult is it? I’ve been in HR for 20 years and have experienced ALOT in that time, although there are always employee relations scenarios that surprise me! How much do I really need to study for this? I just can’t seem to motivate myself to do it, I’m so mentally burnt out at the end of the day from a high stress HR job, the last thing I feel like doing is studying HR!

TCS Hr revised my ctc to 27.5lpa from 24lpa for C3A band & shared ctc break up. I negotiated asking him to revise the fixed comp to 26lpa & JB. He said that he would try for fixed comp of 26lpa but no JB. Later he came back saying he can't get an approval for 28lpa & asking me if I'm okay with 24lpa & he would try to get 24lpa also if possible. Is he trying to get the ctc down or does he can't get approval? How do I get him to give the 27.5lpa break up offer? YOE:9y6m Role:Infra ManagerTata Cons

Hi Fishes,
I have overall experience of 5yrs. Out of which 3years for US healthcare and 2 years for US mortgage. US mortgage domain has now become thinner as industry almost sunk since most of the companies has laid off employees, I was also the victim. Fortunately, got an opportunity to work Optum but heard rumours about the lay-off in our entire process which is creating a frustration and negativity all around. While negotiating the offer the recruiter came back to me and said "We’re working through headcount planning right now. The position you applied to is closed". Looks like a hiring freeze. Does this mean layoffs are coming up? What about the candidates (like myself) who cleared HC and was in negotiating process?
