Additional Posts in In-House Counsel
I have a dear friend who was recent laid off from a tech company. I’m currently in my first in-house counsel position and was able to secure the job off of cold applying and don’t really have much advice to give. I really want to help support. I know about goinhouse.com and I know people say recruiters (I never found them helpful so wondering how). How did you find your gig? Sites? Been laid off and how to bounce back? Thanks!

Could be a good thing! Is it possible it might be an opportunity more than a liability? A lot of games have room for more players rather than being zero-sum, especially if you view the game as bigger than just your legal dept. You two can rise up together and be good colleagues (and maybe even friends), and help each other level up. Or one of you may leave eventually. Maybe you’ll go back to the firm and your potential rival could be a client (or vice versa). Dangling carrots of potential career progression (particularly to new hires) are frequently illusory promises, and depend on results and circumstances.
It sounds to me like there is a ton of work to be done. Trust me, they didn’t hire the other attorney just to have a competition. My co-workers who are around my level are people I actually like and get along with and we help each other out. I’d say this is great to have someone to learn the ropes with and overcome the learning curve.
What’s the concern exactly? What are you hoping to get by raising it to your manager?
I'm also curious.
What is the problem here? Your reaction sounds a little snowflake-y to me. Were you under the impression that you would be the only one with the Staff Attny/Sr. Counsel/Assistant Gen Counsel title in the legal dept? Legal departments do not have $100k to throw away on extra headcount just so they can play head games with their current staff. If they hired this second person, then it’s because the workflow is so heavy that they need a second pair of hands - it’s not meant to be an insult to you.
Should I bring this up with my manager?
