I’m an alcoholic got sober while I was taking a break from work to focus on my recovery. During that time, I attended 12 step meetings in a certain secret society. It took me a while before I hit my emotional bottom and started to fully embrace the principles of recover. I jumped into my local recovery community and had service positions at four separate meetings. As corny as it sounds, making coffee and setting up chairs saved my life.
During that time, I developed the skills to avoid reaching for a drink whenever life got lifey. If you’re struggling now, don’t beat yourself up. It takes months to develop new habits. I know how much early recovery sucks, but it does get better. Getting sober was the most difficult thing that I’ve accomplished in life (much more difficult than passing two separate state bar exams), but it is definitely the best thing that has happened to me and my family.
There are multiple paths to recovery, but I would suggest that you start with attending some in-person 12 step meetings. Introduce yourself and let your fellow addicts/alcoholics know that you are struggling. There are plenty of folks out there who are willing and able to help.
