Hello Gang, I’m on the business side for Walmart right now. Walmart Global Tech recently offered me a role to move to the San Bruno office, but I’d be taking a demotion from L6 to E5. YOE: 8, COMP(200k base, 25% bonus, 100k RSU). Is this competitive in the bay? I have Doordash and Instacart in the pipeline, but no final offers yet.

Haven't made the switch, but I am a hiring manager in integrated production. I can say I've worked with a lot of creatives who naturally have great PM skills and can totally see them making a switch. If you're thinking of something specialized (like broadcast producer vs integrated producer) then your background as an AD could help even more.
I don't think you would have to start over in terms of salary, knowing agency process already would put you above someone straight out of school. If you were able to make a switch internally that would probably put you in a better position - I doubt any agency would cut your salary for a switch like that.
I hope that's helpful or encouraging. If you have any questions let me know, I'd be happy to chat.
That’s very encouraging thank you! I’ve been afraid to talk to them because I wasn’t sure how receptive they’d be lol. I was thinking broadcast because that’s what I’m most familiar with so it might be worth the conversation.
I felt like I wrote this post! I’m in the same boat right now. I am at a small shop so I’ve had to wear many hats which has made me start to wonder if production would be a better route for me.
Sorry I don’t have helpful input but this hit my feels for sure!
You might be in a better position to make the switch then!
I commented on your other post but I’ll add here as well.
I use to be in production outside of advertising before moving to creative. And yes, you typically start at the bottom.
There are special situations where Directors start off as Directors but that’s because they go to school for film or are already making films on their own and have Portfolios to back it up.
Since you didn’t go to school for production, you just need to start doing it by either getting hired as a PA or producing your own work.
But even if you produce your own work, there aren’t any guarantees that people will trust you to run a production.
You might get a better chance at becoming a producer at a smaller shop where you will have to wear multiple hats.
