Deloitte bait and switch? Interviewed for Manager level role. All interviews said I was a great fit for manager. Verbal offer comes back for Senior. Is this standard practice?

No big 4 doesn't catch you up lmao. Maybe at MBB @bain but def not here. I know managers making 105k at EY and KPMG because they were underpaid associates and senior associates. Sadly, you need to jump ship for your market value to be relevant.

They love to keep you underpaid that's their business. Higher margins.

like

Happened to me and glad it did. D1 said it best. And who cares if you eventually catch up, you’ll have made more money along the way. FV of those extra bucks baby.

I did the same with C and SC. Started at 110 as C, 5 years, no mba, climbing nicely :)

like

Not only is it standard practice but they also put you on a slower track as compared to those SCs being recruited out of MBA programs. Hold your ground on only being interested in an M role.

like

All of it is shady AF. If that salary is at Manger level and you're OK with the SC title (which would be OK in some instances), then fine. Otherwise, walk. They're playing games and you don't deserve that.

like

Yes this is standard practice.

The higher the level the harder it is to come in at that level, that is true. Much better to come in at a lower level than to be promoted upon hire and fail.

If you really believe you’re ready for M then I would tell them that’s your condition, tell them to kick rocks. You’re going to be at the SC level for AT LEAST a year and you need to not be resentful of the fact you aren’t an M. Money could help with that.

like

Happened with me too. I accepted their C offer, here’s why (goes without saying that ymmv):
- Salary is good for me at this point
- Accepting this offer also allows me to come back to consulting from industry (and more importantly moving out of tech audit)
- The last partner who interviewed me explained to me transparently why they wanted to bring me in as an Exp C vs SC, and I agreed with their thought process
- Recruiter had brought this up in my initial screen as well, so it was not really a surprise when it happened

I also agree with folks here that it actually gives me a chance to learn and position myself for a promotion by taking the right amount of time.

like

EY4 just accepted offer at C level as well and my thinking is in line with yours, making great money so why not keep making great money not have to deal with the bs of a Manager as soon

like

Coming in as a Manager at Deloitte is really hard also. I have only been here 4 years but have not seen a person successfully hired in as M. Even from the SC side - it seems like half are truly SC material. The ones that are- I have seen get promoted very quickly. Like hired 5 months before YE and securing promo. It is what you make if it.

like

I’m all for upfront disclosure. It happens all the time. It’s the principle of playing games I don’t jive with. We’re not kids. There are times you apply for a position and realize that it’s a lot more than you bargained for and changing position makes sense. Roles mean so many things in different places. But if I did all the interviews and I find out in my verbal offer or offer letter, that’s pretty lame

like

Same exact thing happened to me at D. I’d been a M for 2 years at another firm, interviewed at M but offer came in as SC with the same $ that we had discussed for M. I took it and so happy that I did. D is highly competitive and I would have struggled as a new hire at M. 5 years later i’m going in to my 3rd year as M at Deloitte and couldn’t be happier.

like

I’m joining as a M at Deloitte with SA experience. Wish me luck!
Same story, interviewed for M, got SA/SC offer but went back with a number over SC band.
Any tips for a new Manager at D?

like

For those curious on this - Original offer came back 140/10. Asked for more because of level discrepancy.

like

I'd say it's fine as long as salary is on point, rock your first project or two and put in for an early promote

Thanks D1 - Same experience with relevant MS. I have a call later with the lead partner so we will see what happens.

Advisory or Consulting

What’s even more fun is when Uncle D bills SC’s at managed level rates.

They want it both ways. It’s also nice to bid out sc’s at m levels and get huge margins. Just like offshore resources.

OP may I ask what service line?
Looking at potentially making a jump over there (manager experience currently) running teams and work streams, but get paid well for my years of experience (3) and my promotion soon would put me around 140k

Pwc1 we don’t get better margins based on titles. The comp/cost of an SC is closer to a manager at other firms

Well.. it’s perception too.. some people prefer title/role over money some other way round..

Hi Everyone,

I need some advice, I left Infosys on 27th Jan, I had an offer from Accenture to join them on 28th Jan. However just on my last working day itself, I got an offer from wabtec, it's not a service based org, so I thought I should give it a go. However their DOJ is on 14th feb. They have to complete BGV.
Now the only other offer I have is from TCS to join them on 2nd Feb, I'm a bit scared as to is it a good idea to say no to tcs and stay unemployed in pursuit of working with wabtec?

2. Is there any hidden component which may deduct from my salary?
3. How variable pay will be paid? monthly or quarterly or annually?
4. How much variable pay we will get by Average?

Additional Posts in Consulting

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

Inspired by one of my kids' favorite books, I penned this masterpiece of an Ode to Consulting:

One senior partner all alone
Calls two managing directors on the phone
Three associate partners at the door
Bring along another four
Five senior managers come overdressed
Six managers show up with a guest
Seven senior consultants arrive in a sack
Eight associates sneak in the back
Nine analysts come to work
ALL THE CONSULTANTS GO BERSERK!!!

Ok, I'll show myself out now... 😂
