Infantry- really highlighted the working long days in ambiguous/challenging situations. Also made sure to call out the fact that I was directly overseeing day to day operations for the soldiers underneath me.
Different direction. Infantry doesn’t really align with many civilian jobs but the soft skills transfer easily
Complete 180
Completely different route and then ended up years later in the tactical area again
Pro
Completely different direction. Strategy consulting was a lucrative switch though ($175k when I started post-MBA)
Kinda. I was a Navy nuke. Used the GI Bill to get an MBA and switch to strategy consulting. Definitely nothing like the day-to-day on a submarine, but I wouldn't have gotten the job without my military experience and the quant practice of being nuke helped me with the GMAT and case prep.
Sorta -- I didn't seek it out that way but my MOS and related certs (Ammo, hazmat) got my first civilian job years back (hazmat w/ DHL) since I could prove proficiency. Never took the USA JOBS / Cleared Vets / Vet-focused Network approach.
I was infantry. But both of my jobs after service considered my experience in hiring me. They considered presentation skills, communications, and management.
Used my time in to stash GI Bill money to pay for college. 6 years later went in to software consulting with a MBA.
I did. Work on flight controls and then went to a. Company that designed displays for aircraft.
No. Fire Support Officer to finance
Yep. Repaired attack helicopters and leveraged that plus my degrees to land a job in software consulting. They specifically called out they liked my military background
I like to think it didn't help, but it probably did. I was in the USMC and was already working on my CPA exam eligibility when I got a job at the VA Hospital as an accounting technician. I'm now a CPA and currently enjoying my high level accounting job elsewhere in the Federal Government.
It didn't help at all...
Landed it because of my mil skills
different tho I was a reservist doing it for tuition, enlisted MOS now programmer
As far as going into my MOS civilian counterpart, no I went in a different direction as I was an MP but now am in finance. However, what I did lean on was translating my MOS functions and NCO functions into a business context. Report writing, briefing senior leadership, investigations, being responsible with classified information, etc as my MOS and all the leadership examples from being an NCO. Being quantifiable with dollar amounts of equipment, number of projects, outcomes. Also, adding what schools you have been to shows you are teachable and if you been to leadership schools even more so.
I did initially and worked as a dod consultant but have done a completely different direction toward finance now
I was a photojournalist (71Q) in the Army. I think my military experience helped me write and communicate well. But, more importantly, it taught me, self-accountability, teamwork and how to drive to a goal. Those are skills you will need in any job.
