I think of it more like a give and take. We all are given PTO, and I am happy to cover for my coworkers when they get to take off time because I know the favor will be returned when it's my turn to take a vacation.
Set reasonable limits on your time and the time there spent on highest priorities.
Coverage should be a thing yourself, your manager, and your coworkers work out before that person leaves. I'm always happy covering someone since I know my work is in good hands and about 95% of the time I know I won't be bothered when on PTO.
It would be helpful if there was a system that ensures vacation plans don't throw everyone else off balance. Making sure everyone's got a fair share of the workload.
I'm ok doing it if the employee had a proper turnover to me before they went on their vacation. but if it was just sprung on me while they're gone, i'd be annoyed as hell.
I once had to pick up the work for three people who were all out on vacation at the same time. It was a crazy two weeks. Would've been nice to get paid more for it.
