I have one provided to me, but I don't account for it (1x salary I think?). I have a separate term life policy.
Why? If I have a terminal illness or life event I'll likely not be employed when I die and it may be difficult to have a new policy issued that's covering the risk.
I would only buy the policy through work if I was otherwise uninsurable or it's cost prohibitive due to some factor.
THIS! I have a separate term life for each of my kids (born 13 year apart). If I became terminally ill and was unable to work at some point, I did not want to worry about life insurance. You also never know if you leave your employer what the new one will offer.
That being said, I do have the standard firm offered life insurance (1x salary) and also pay for the supplemental (10x salary). It’s pretty inexpensive so it gives me peace of mind knowing that if I die young-ish, my family will be fine.
Your work life insurance policy should be Pennie’s compared to purchasing your own (either whole or term). So take what work offers you. And consider buying separate if necessary.
I do both. Work and I have term life.
I do because I’m young with no dependents and it’s low effort. I maxed it out and it’s a few bucks a paycheck, at least if I die suddenly then my family will get a little cash prize
I do both. The ones with your employer usually have more caveats than the ones outside. And most people don't read that fine print that specifies low coverage amounts, or limited policy options
If you're obese then work may be the only coverage you can get. I'm obese and while I'm in otherwise good health, it's just way too costly to get anything more.
