Do you remember the boycott era? Now we have cancel culture which feels much more personal and has more definitive results, and I know we're getting out of that but I'm seeing social boycott behavior in the office where someone says something that's fairly innocuous and particularly among the younger generation that person just gets isolated and ignored from then on. I really don't know how to handle it without seeming like I'm undermining whatever efforts the boycotters want to support.

My perspective on this really depends on what you're seeing as fairly innocuous. Sometimes, I would agree. Other times, it's clear that what was said was not OK, and we don't need to associate with people whose moral are counter to ours. Work with them, sure, but I don't need to be their buddy. It reminds me of my school days when teachers would try to force us to include kids we didn't get along with or who were flat out annoying, or bullied us.

That's just plain bullying imo. Don't just wait for the problem to go away on its own. Talk to the person who is being isolated and find out what's going on. They may not even be aware of the situation.

What would you do if you didn’t need money? I have a fair amount coming one day and don’t actually need to work to live a good life (middle / upper-middle class). I work because of this vague notion of “ambition” and because everyone I grew up around is highly competitive and hard driving. I am being tapped to translate documents at work. I’ve done spot translation audits, and 1 larger Quality assurance document earlier this year, but was recently contacted about a potential large-scale translation initiative for next year.
