Yep, not terribly common but after they won that case it was up for the company to decide. I remember how mad I was about that too. Fair enough to have your religious observations, but getting to pick and choose doesn’t feel right and still doesn’t today.
That sort of thing can be legal now. It's good to investigate companies before taking a job, if they have a political or religious orientation you could find yourself disadvantaged. They may have the right to take away the benefits, but you have the right not to work for them, that's what it comes down to.
I don’t know how common it is, but I know that it’s perfectly legal and some companies will just claim religious exemption just to not have to pay for it. My company does cover contraception so that is a perk. I probably wanna work for a company that didn’t just cause I don’t believe that’s right
